Purpose For the 2026-2027 academic year, the Department of Theatre and Dance is looking for creative, customer-service oriented student employees to join the department’s Front of House team as a Theatre Usher. This position assists with the smooth operation of our venues (both the lobby and audience seating area) during performances by welcoming the public to our theatres and supports the Front of House Manager in ensuring audience safety and well-being before, during and immediately after performances. This is a part time position requiring day, evening and weekend shifts coordinated around our season performance schedule.

Responsibilities • Provides excellent customer service and an excellent patron experience for all guests. Assists in resolving patron issues or concerns.
• Oversees the safety of guests; provides leadership in emergency situations in communication with production.
• Assists Front of House Manager in coordinating performance timelines with stage management, including preshow, curtain speeches, intermission and any post-show discussions.
• Assists in maintaining theatre policies and procedures during performances.
• Maintains ticket-scanning equipment, hearing impaired devices and walkie-talkies for communicating with stage management. Additionally manages printed program distribution and signage, ensuring all materials are secured at the end of the event.
• Maintains the appearance of the lobby and all public areas; communicates with Front of House Manager as necessary to ensure a clean and orderly space.
• Theatre Ushers should also have an understanding of ticket policies and procedures to relay to customers, collect complete and accurate data from patrons and provide feedback regarding customer experience. Theatre Ushers may also be asked to assist with walkup sales and will call if necessary.
• Other duties as required.
Required Qualifications • Must be a University of Texas at Austin student, enrolled for at least 6 credit hours.
• Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
• Customer service experience, preferably in the ticketing, entertainment, arts or hospitality industries.
• Ability to maintain a high level of poise and professionalism in all circumstances.
• Ability to stand for long periods of time.
• Strong written and verbal skills.
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Preferred Qualifications • Strong attention to detail.
• Understanding of software programs including point of sale systems and Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.
• Experience with ticketing systems (Thundertix).
• Passion for and/or experience in the performing arts.
Hourly Rate $12.50/hour
Working Conditions • Work performed at indoor theatre venues.
• Constant proximity with the public.
• Standing and/or walking for an extended period of time.
Work Shift • 6 hours per week during our performance season.
• Work to be performed in-person, on campus (300 East 23rd Street, Austin, Texas).
• Position ends on April 30, 2027.
• Rehire eligible based on performance.
