Valmont is currently seeking a highly motivated and talented individual for the Shipping/Receiving Assistant position in the Petersburg, Virginia Coatings site. This is an individual contributor who will assist with receiving, unloading, and storing incoming products; inspecting finished products for damage and defects; ensuring all products meet established quality standards prior to distribution. They will operate heavy equipment used to move material including forklifts and pallet jacks. Incumbent will assist with detailed intake inspections of incoming materials, including measurements, photographic records, and written documentation, while creating material tags and maintaining accurate electronic records. Incumbent will assist with inspecting galvanized products to ensure a high-quality finished product and making recommendations to resolve any damage or defects found in products. Interact professionally with customers and truck drivers to facilitate efficient loading and unloading operations; coordinate special handling requirements identified during inspections; maintain plant cleanliness and organization through routine housekeeping; and consistently follow safety procedures, including the proper use of required personal protective equipment (PPE). Incumbent will assist with inspecting galvanized products to ensure a high-quality finished product and making recommendations to resolve any damage or defects found in products. Also, working closely with other employees to resolve any issues concerning customer orders. When not involved with activities associated with the shipping / receiving of materials; the incumbent will be utilized in other areas of the facility as needed to assist with the production of galvanized materials. These departments can include rigging, process tanks, kettle, and dressing departments.
Essential Functions: • Operate forklifts with the capacity to move up to 35,000 lbs. of material on and off flatbed trailers or box trucks when applicable. • Communicating potential problems or needs with material to site leadership • Inspect incoming material for proper venting and draining holes/lifting attachments • Inspect galvanized material to ensure it meets the quality standards, reject material that does not meet quality standards, and coordinate special handling for this material • Move pieces of steel and other material up to 50 pounds by hand from different locations in the plant and yard
Important Details about the Role • The ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and VCCMax (ability to learn VCCMax) • Proficient at reading tags, bills of lading, and shipping and receiving papers • Completion of the American Galvanizers Association (AGA) Inspection course • Stand 90% of a shift and work outside in extreme weather conditions • The ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a positive manner • Pay attention to detail and follow work instructions • High awareness for safety • The ability to work overtime to include weekends and potentially holidays • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results • Answer phone calls, greet visitors, and direct appropriately • Respond to customer questions, concerns, and requests • Check in material and check out customer orders • Create tags on incoming products with details including piece count and finished product packaging • Work daily with production to meet customer commitment request • Help to expedite orders through shops to achieve on-time delivery of customers • Provide updates regarding planned shipping & delivery dates • Seek daily communication from upstream departments to ensure products are correctly prioritized • Audit all material quality before shipping • Ensure proper flow of paperwork for certifications and inspections • Notify customers when material is complete and ready for pickup • Coordinate 3rd party freight and arrange special packaging or shipping requirements as requested by customers
Required Qualifications for Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) • Zero (0) to (1) year of relevant experience • Ability to work with wood and small hand tools such as tape measures, saws, drills, riveters, and nail guns • Ability to become certified in operation of overhead cranes and/or forklifts • Ability to ensure that products meet quality standards • Ability to bundle, crate, box, and wrap products to be shipped • Ability to load a truck • Ability to operate computer to enter product information • High School Diploma or GED equivalent • Excellent communication and customer service skills • Must have a pleasant and friendly “can do” attitude • Ability to be exposed to outdoors elements for significant durations of time • Ability to wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when inside the production facility • Must be a person of passion and integrity who has the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results • Must be able to read and follow written and verbal instructions.
