Job Posting Title: Work Study: Chemistry Stockroom/Instrumentation/Demos Student Associate ---- Hiring Department: Department of Chemistry ---- Position Open To: All Applicants ---- Weekly Scheduled Hours: 19 ---- FLSA Status: To Be Determined at Offer ---- Earliest Start Date: Ongoing ---- Position Duration: Limited Duration Based on Business Need ---- Location: UT MAIN CAMPUS ---- Job Details: Purpose For Fall 2026, the Chemistry department has multiple ( Work-Study only ) positions available to support the day-to-day operation of chemistry teaching labs by helping prepare and maintain the materials, equipment, and safety standards students, TAs, and faculty depend on. These roles help students build clear and organized communication skills, sound and inclusive decision-making and problem-solving abilities, and a strong sense of integrity and accountability in their work with others.
Responsibilities Stockroom Student Associate: A-Chem, P-Chem, O-Chem, Gen Chem/Inorganic • Prepare teaching lab spaces by restocking solutions, reagents, equipment, and consumables
• Prepare stock solutions, reagents, supplies, and equipment for student use
• Monitor compliance with safety standards by students, TAs, faculty, and staff
• Provide first line customer service to lab students interacting with the stockroom
Instrumentation Student Associate • Prepare instruments before lab sessions, ensuring proper setup
• Perform routine startup and shutdown procedures on analytical equipment following the Instrument Check Instructions (e.g., spectrophotometers, chromatographs)
• Carry out basic troubleshooting and maintenance tasks under supervision
• Report equipment issues and coordinate with staff for service needs
• Keep lab environments clean and organized.
• Weekly gas cylinders gauge reading and replacement if necessary
• Update the computer system regularly and perform backup testing of data
• Stockroom duties as assigned
• Follow all safety protocols and proper lab practices
Demos Student Associate • Assist with the preparation, delivery, and clean-up procedures for classroom demonstrations.
• Prepare teaching lab spaces by restocking solutions, reagents, equipment, and consumables
• Prepare stock solutions, reagents, supplies, and equipment for student use
• Monitor compliance with safety standards by students, TAs, faculty, and staff
• Provide first line customer service to lab students interacting with the stockroom
Required Qualifications • Current undergraduate at UT Austin enrolled/registered for the current semester, and in good academic standing.
• Previous completion of a chemistry lab course at UT.

• Confidently navigate safety protocols, emergency procedures, and comply with lab-specific, UT Environmental Health & Safety-specific, state, and national rules and regulations.
• Capacity to learn quickly, improvise solutions to unforeseen obstacles, and adapt to a fast-paced, go-with-the-flow environment.
• Ability to work efficiently in Google Apps, including Google Sheets, as well as Microsoft Excel
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
Salary Range
$13 Hourly + depending on qualifications and position selected for
Working Conditions • Based in chemistry teaching labs, stockrooms, and prep/instrument rooms, with regular exposure to chemicals, reagents, glassware, gas cylinders, and lab equipment
• Requires standing, walking, and light-to-moderate lifting, along with adherence to all safety protocols and PPE requirements
• Involves computer work, including keyboard use, data entry, and software navigation (e.g., Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, instrument software)
• Fast-paced environment with workloads tied to class and lab schedules, requiring both independent work and close coordination with faculty, TAs, and student staff
• Flexible availability needed, including early mornings, afternoons, or occasional evenings based on lab and demo timing
Work Shift
Flexible work hours between Monday-Friday 7am-11pm, based on student schedule. A max of 19 hours a week due to Work-Study restrictions.
