The Software Engineering Intern will be a member of the Avionics Datalink Products team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Our team develops airborne software that enables communication between aircraft, airline ground facilities, and air traffic controllers through a variety of communication networks.

As an intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers on embedded avionics software and gain exposure to the software development lifecycle for commercial aerospace products.

What You Will Do • Support the design, development, integration, and verification of embedded software for airborne Datalink products. • Develop and modify software primarily using C/C++. • Assist with software requirements, design, coding, testing, and debugging activities. • Support development and testing of flight deck and cabin display applications and associated software logic. • Develop or enhance software tools, scripts, and test automation to improve engineering efficiency. • Collaborate with software, systems, and verification engineers to investigate technical problems and implement solutions. • Participate in engineering reviews, team meetings, and other activities associated with the software development lifecycle.

What You Will Learn • Gain hands-on experience developing embedded software for commercial avionics products. • Learn how safety-critical aerospace software progresses from requirements through design, development, integration, verification, and certification. • Gain exposure to airborne communication and Datalink technologies used to connect aircraft with airline operations and air traffic control. • Develop practical experience working in a collaborative engineering environment on real aerospace products. • Build technical skills in software development, debugging, testing, automation, and engineering processes.

Qualifications You Must Have • Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or Advanced degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM discipline and actively enrolled through completion of the internship session. • Must have a minimum of 60 hours of college credit by the start of the internship session. • Experience programming in C, C++, or another object-oriented programming language. • Experience with software development concepts, including coding, debugging, testing, or software design. • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and communicate technical information effectively.

Experience may be obtained through on-the-job experience, research, coursework, or projects.

Qualifications We Prefer • Coursework or project experience using C or C++. • Experience with Python, scripting, test automation, or software development tools. • Exposure to embedded software, real-time systems, or hardware/software integration. • Interest in aerospace, avionics, aircraft communication systems, or safety-critical software development. • Prior RTX internship, co-op, or work experience.

The salary range for this role is 37,000 USD - 82,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
