Position Summary The Associate Director position is part of the Undergraduate Admissions Office team reporting to a Senior Associate Director of Admissions and focuses on helping the University meet its goals of enrolling a talented student body and serving the St. Louis community with information about college opportunity.
This position is responsible for the organization and direction of the College Prep Program, an opportunity program serving talented high school students from the St. Louis region. The position will oversee recruitment and selection of high school students for College Prep programming, plan a College Prep program curriculum, and oversee Summer Academy, an opportunity for College Prep students to gain experience on WashU’s campus. This role will also oversee a College Counselor/Program Assistant who will provide direct guidance on college applications and support execution of College Prep program functions.
In addition to recruiting and overseeing College Prep, the Associate Director will also work within the Admissions Office for first-year recruitment and application review, with a specific emphasis on working to develop and implement strategies to support the recruitment, admission, and yield of diverse, highly talented, resource-impacted students from the St. Louis region to WashU’s undergraduate programs. The Associate Director will serve as primary contact to the In St. Louis For St. Louis unit and other campus and community partners invested in our St. Louis area efforts. Additionally, the Associate Director leads the effort to build strong relationships with on- and off-campus Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) in St. Louis. The Associate works with the admission officers to provide guidance and training to support the team’s efforts to outreach and communicate to high school counselors, students, and families in St. Louis; WashU’s In St. Louis, For St. Louis efforts; and CBOs in St. Louis.
The Associate Director is responsible for sustaining existing initiatives and partnerships alongside initiating and fulfilling new ideas and providing supervision to staff members to implement plans and programs. The role directly supervises staff members in their work to meet University goals and is responsible for the performance of assigned staff. This position also guides and indirectly manages staff members working on projects related to the Associate Director’s areas.

Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
• Lead the College Prep Program: Lead in the design, delivery, and monitoring of high school College Prep Program programming serving more than 100 students for Summer Academy and the full academic year. Conduct long-term strategic planning to ensure continued success of the program. Work with both Washington University and non-Washington University faculty and administrators to develop challenging and appropriate curricular offerings for Summer Academy and the full academic year. Lead in the regular evaluation of College Prep Program outcomes, collaborating with the Strategic Analysis team to create appropriate assessments and use data to drive decision-making about program activities.
• Staff Management and Supervision: Supervise assigned staff, including providing coaching, feedback, and performance evaluation. Provide management and oversight for staff members’ work performance, including routine work, special projects and programs, and compliance with office and University procedures. Directly and indirectly lead staff members to execute projects and programs related to assigned area(s). Collaborate with colleagues, supervisor, and departmental leadership (as needed) to provide training and management to staff broadly on topics related to projects/programs. Additionally, the Associate Director may supervise student staff.
• Recruitment Management: Manage recruitment territory that involves travel and interactions with students, parents, and counselors at high school visits, college fairs, panels, and other college recruitment activities in St. Louis. Provide expert admissions advice to prospective students and families. Conduct workshops on college admissions. Work closely with high school counselors and CBOs to develop strong relationships for the University. Excellent communication skills and knowledge about the University and admissions is critical. Must maintain a professional attitude at all times as a representative of the University.
• Application Evaluation and Selection Process: Review and evaluate applications and lead committee teams to make admissions recommendations and decisions aligned with institutional goals. Confidentiality and thoughtful consideration of the applicants are a must. Must have the ability to work independently following admissions guidelines; lead and participate in high level strategic discussions and decision-making processes; keep pace with reading expectations; and meet all deadlines throughout the reading season. Keep staff on track while maintaining volume and quality of own work; have excellent judgment and ability to see the “big picture”” to meet all institutional goals. Privy to sensitive strategic information. Must maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Service: Conduct information sessions about the University and Admissions for prospective students and families. Provide customer service by answering phone calls and emails from prospective students and parents in a timely manner. Answer questions about the University, admissions, and St. Louis. Work with faculty, deans, and representatives from other departments in the University to support recruitment and enrollment efforts. Must be able to make mature decisions and recommendations to management.
