Indian River State College is seeking an enthusiastic and student-focused Assistant Professor I, Biological Sciences to inspire learners in the classroom, laboratory, and online environments. JOB SUMMARY: The Biology Instructor is responsible for providing high-quality instruction in biological sciences through classroom, laboratory, and online learning environments. The position develops and delivers engaging curriculum, assesses student learning outcomes, maintains academic records, and supports student success through advising, mentoring, and retention initiatives. The instructor participates in departmental planning, curriculum development, assessment activities, committee service, community engagement, and grant-related projects. The role requires a commitment to innovative teaching practices, the effective use of instructional technology, and fostering student achievement in a diverse learning environment.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The specific duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to: • Prepare a syllabus for the lecture class and laboratories; • Instruct the lecture class and laboratories with a minimum of thirty-six (36) semester hours annually; • Grade all quizzes, tests, and written assignments; and enter grades in Canvas gradebook on a timely basis; • Assign final grades; • Maintain regularly scheduled office hours to meet with students; • Develop and maintain course management through the college’s Learning Management system; • Participate in Department budget preparation and in course planning and development; • Assist with Divisional projects and programs; • Serve effectively on committees or workgroups; • Develop and/or implement strategies to support students’ retention, persistence, and program completion is essential; • Participating in grant writing individually and/or on a team; • Complete all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
The qualifications and skill requirements for this position include: • Master’s degree (M.S.) in Biology, with a minimum of 18 graduate hours in Biology required. Additional graduate work in microbiology, plant biology, biochemistry, or biotechnology preferred; • Proven knowledge of and preference for experience in teaching microbiology, plant biology, biotechnology, biochemistry and the associated laboratories; • Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written; • Ability to work with and teach to diverse populations is essential; • Ability to apply traditional and innovative technologies is essential; • Ability to develop and/or implement strategies to support students’ retention, persistence, and program completion is essential; • Ability to use data and assessment tools in the evaluation and improvement of instruction; • Ability to engage students as active partners in the teaching/learning process; • Ability to relate the concepts of biology to real life situations and applications; • Computer literacy and experience using technology in the learning environment is essential; • An understanding of learning styles is preferred; willingness to learn is essential; • Appropriate credentialing requirements to meet all current and future ac
