Veterinary Assistant Primary Care

About this role

Primary Care Veterinary Assistants play a vital role at the Schwarzman Animal Medical Center. They work alongside our veterinarians and veterinary technicians to provide comfort and care for all our patients. Our veterinary assistants help during patient exams, blood sampling, and catheter placement, and assist in running point-of-care laboratory tests. Primary Care Veterinary Assistants can take advantage of our career ladder to learn and advance to roles such as surgical instrument assistants and patient care assistants. We also offer tuition assistance to employees seeking to continue their education and the opportunity to earn externship hours for accredited veterinary technology programs.

Duties and responsibilities

• Start appts, first time consults, and rechecks.

• Getting Vitals

• Entering vitals in records

• Entering bloodwork

• Going over instructions on discharges w/ owners

• Speaks to owners on the phone

• Call in medications to pharmacies

• Holding for urinary catheters

• Setting up prep for surgery

• Setting up OR

• Rolling P into surgery OR

• Opening surgical instrument packs

• Scrubbing and preparing for surgery

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent

• 2 years of work experience, preferably in a similar position

• Must have animal handling experience, and be able to restrain all species

• Must be able to lift 50 pounds

• Must be able to work successfully as part of a team

• Must have the ability to remain composed in stressful and emergency situations

• Must be flexible about working additional hours when necessary

• Excellent organizational, multi-tasking, and communication skills are essential

• Must be able to follow detailed protocols

• Must neatly and correctly fill out paperwork as necessary

Pay Range $17.30 — $22.55 USD
