The US Director, Strategic Initiatives will lead high priority commercial initiatives that accelerate business growth, strengthen customer engagement, and advance long term commercial capabilities across the U.S. obesity portfolio. Working across the organization, this leader will evaluate strategic opportunities, develop actionable business recommendations, and partner with cross functional teams to bring new ideas from concept to execution.
This position is ideal for a strategic and entrepreneurial leader who thrives in ambiguity, challenges conventional thinking, and translates complex business opportunities into measurable results. Success in this role requires comfort operating where there are few precedents and where defining the problem is often as important as solving it.
What You Will Do
The US Director, Strategic Initiatives is responsible for identifying, evaluating, and advancing strategic initiatives that strengthen commercial performance and position the business for future growth. This role partners closely with cross functional leaders to assess evolving customer needs, emerging market dynamics, and business opportunities while developing recommendations that drive meaningful business impact. This leader will work across multiple commercial priorities, bringing together customer insights, analytics, external perspectives, and commercial expertise to inform strategic decisions and enable future growth.
Key Responsibilities
Lead Commercial Growth Initiatives • Identify strategic opportunities that strengthen commercial performance and create sustainable competitive advantages.
• Evaluate evolving customer needs, market dynamics, and external trends to inform future commercial strategies.
• Identify opportunities that do not have a natural organizational owner but could materially improve commercial performance.
• Rapidly assess feasibility, business value, stakeholder alignment, and execution pathways.
• Synthesize customer insights, competitive intelligence, technology trends, healthcare evolution, analytics, and external market signals into actionable commercial strategies.
• Design and oversee pilot initiatives to evaluate new commercial approaches, partnerships, technologies, and engagement models before broader implementation.
Advance Strategic Business Priorities • Lead high priority initiatives that span multiple commercial functions and business objectives.
• Evaluate new approaches, capabilities, and partnerships that support long term business growth.
• Develop success measures and implementation plans that enable effective execution.
• Partner with functional leaders to transition strategic initiatives into operational execution.
• Develop executive level recommendations that influence portfolio strategy and commercial investment decisions.
Lead Enterprise Collaboration • Partner closely with Marketing, Sales, Medical, Market Access, Analytics, Digital, Corporate Affairs, Operations, Regulatory, Legal, and Global teams to drive alignment on strategic priorities.
• Build consensus across diverse stakeholder groups while navigating complex business challenges.
• Facilitate strategic discussions that enable timely decision making and organizational alignment.
• Transition successful initiatives into sustainable operating models with clear ownership.
Shape Future Commercial Capabilities • Identify opportunities to strengthen commercial capabilities, customer engagement approaches, and ways of working.
• Promote a culture of continuous improvement by identifying scalable and repeatable solutions that improve business performance.
• Monitor the evolving healthcare landscape to anticipate future opportunities and business needs.
• Continuously assess external market trends, emerging technologies, adjacent industries, and evolving customer behaviors to identify opportunities before they become mainstream.
What We Expect Of You
Basic Qualifications: • Doctorate degree and 4 years of Marketing experience OR
• Master’s degree and 7 years of Marketing experience OR
• Bachelor’s degree and 9 years of Marketing experience
Preferred Qualifications • Significant experience in pharmaceutical or biotechnology marketing, commercial strategy, business consulting, business development, or related commercial leadership roles.
• Proven success leading strategic initiatives that deliver measurable commercial impact.
• Demonstrated ability to develop compelling business cases supported by customer insights, analytics, and market intelligence.
• Experience leading cross functional initiatives from strategy development through implementation.
• Strong strategic thinking with the ability to identify opportunities, solve complex business challenges, and navigate ambiguity.
• Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders and build alignment across highly matrixed organizations including experience influencing cross functional teams, leading complex strategic initiatives, and driving outcomes through collaboration without direct authority.
• Experience evaluating new commercial capabilities, customer engagement models, or business opportunities that support long term growth.
• Strong executive communication and presentation skills.
• Track record of delivering results in fast paced, high visibility environments with multiple competing priorities.
• Ability to balance long term strategic thinking with disciplined execution.
• Proven success leading commercialization efforts for major product launches, launch readiness activities, or high growth brands.
