Underwriter – Inland Marine – NA

The Underwriter – Inland Marine – NA, is responsible for the portfolio development, maintenance, and profitable growth elements of the Inland Marine business unit. This includes assisting the division leader in building out the product set and the underwriting team to meet the North American unit’s goals.

This role will report to the Head of Inland Marine - NA and includes responsibility for the establishment of a business plan and financial outcome in conjunction with the Head of North Americas business plans and goals.

In order to achieve the financial return targets, this position will also work with other cross-functional teams and Product Development functions such as Product Management, P&C Actuarial, Claims, Underwriting, Finance and Accounting to improve the overall customer experience, satisfaction, profitability, quality and consistency to meet the Inland Marine product line objectives and to ensure decisions contribute to a profitable portfolio as requested by the Inland Marine leader.

Job Responsibilities • Responsible for review and analysis of underwriting data to determine risk eligibility to corporate standards • Develop and manage distribution relationships through excellent customer service and creative marketing activities • Provide subject matter expertise on inland marine insurance within the organization as required • Meet profitability and premium goals determined by the head of North America and the department • Make independent decisions within underwriting letter of authority and maintain proper file documentation • Responsible for liaising with US distribution leaders to analyze results and maintaining accountability of broker partners within the department • Possess and develop a keen awareness of market trends and identify emerging threats to the department • Have an in-depth knowledge of department products and services • Ability to clearly articulate the department’s value proposition • Participate in training and initiatives • Travel required • Other duties as assigned by department head

Job Requirements: • A minimum of 5 years’ experience underwriting multiple inland marine classes • Existing relationships with wholesale and retail producers with a focus on Inland Marine business • Manuscript, Company and AAIS Inland Marine form experience • Strong communication, analytical and negotiation skills • Travel for marketing and/or training purposes, including attendance at national industry events • Strong customer service and relationship-building skills • Must be able to work well in a small, tightly knit team environment, but also be able to work independently within an assigned underwriting authority document, territory and appetite • Proficient in the use of Microsoft software applications • Will abide by departmental policies and procedures, including authority levels, to comply with all risk management controls

For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of $100,000 to $120,000. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of a variety of factors including your specific experience and work location. 

In addition, you will be offered competitive target incentive compensation, with awards based on overall corporate and individual performance.
