Job Description Summary GE Energy Consulting, a sub business of GE Power, has offices in multiple countries and offers our global clients (external & internal GE) a wide range of solutions across the entire spectrum of power generation, delivery, and utilization. Our Power Systems Engineering team utilizes their deep knowledge of connected power grid planning, design, operation, and life-cycle management to offer customized solutions to our clients. Our Power Economics team offers analyses focused on the understanding and the study of the financial and physical operation of the electric power systems including generation and grid planning, system optimization, asset valuation, competitive power markets and energy policy implications. Over 700 entities worldwide use our Concorda Suite of software tools to assess the economics, performance, and reliability of interconnected power systems.
As a member of the Energy Consulting Power System Operation and Planning (PSOP) team, the Technical Director will contribute to the GE Power and GE Renewable business initiatives, related to power system and power electronics equipment and services.
Job Description Roles & Responsibilities • Lead technical analysis related to power electronic and power systems control of renewable generation, battery energy storage systems, large industrial drives, and FACTS • Develop projects with customers; manage contracts to ensure technical, schedule and cost objectives are met; actively participate in identifying and cultivating new customers and business opportunities; lead preparation of proposals; and develop customer presentations • Lead GE NPI/NTI activities on Inverter-based resources • Lead and organize project teams, guiding the work of individual contributors ensuring that high quality deliverables, budget, and on-time project metrics are met • Support customers with power systems engineering expertise; including EMT modeling, analysis, equipment design and specification, and failure mode analysis • Oversee and perform power system load flow studies, stability analysis, fault studies, transient studies, or detailed equipment modeling using appropriate software tools • Support continuous development of generation, transmission, and distribution products based on evolving codes and standards through participation in industry standards groups and leading innovative approaches to power system analysis
• Effectively communicate results to both internal and external customers by preparing detailed written reports or presentations describing analyses performed, solutions developed, and customer value propositions • Enhance industry knowledge and present technical content in regional forums and conferences; serve as a thought leader in industry activities • Provide mentoring and training to other engineers in the areas of steady state and dynamic power system analysis, Sub-synchronous Resonance (SSR) analysis, control system modeling and tuning, and project execution and management
Required Qualifications • Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university and • Minimum 8 years of industry experience in power system analysis, power electronics equipment design and control and • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated experience supporting Intellectual Property through critical patent filing with at least 10 patents filed as author and/or co-author.
Desired Characteristics: • Experience supporting technical aspects of intellectual property clearance processes for new products • Demonstrated experience executing/leading GE NPI/NTI activities on inverter-based resources control design and performance verification with at least 3 years of leading these activities • Experience performing/leading converter performance verification of wind products, control design, equipment modeling, and requirements definition for wind turbine generator converter NPI teams • Experience performing/leading complex grid interactions studies for wind plants (e.g. SSCI, Weak Grid), develop/design software (parameterization/converter control logic changes for the wind turbines) and/or hardware solution to effectively mitigate these issues • Demonstrated experience in modeling and tuning renewable power generation control systems in EMT suite of tools – for example – PSCAD, WindTRAP • Experience developing control solutions for grid compliance through the use of embedded solutions (Mark VIE, C++) • Experience in hardware/instrumentation, Power hardware in the loop, simulations for analysis and troubleshooting performance goal of Inverter based resources • Experience in the design of power electronics converters for wind application systems • Experience with design and analysis tools such as Matlab/Simulink, Saber, Mathcad, Tina, and ToolboxST • Experience in industry advocacy activities through involvement in industry professional community e.g. IEEE/ CIGRE • Experience with the use and application of common programming languages (e.g. Python, FORTRAN, C++, MATLAB/Simulink), Software version tracking (e.g. TortoiseHg and TortoiseSVN). • Demonstrated application of complex mathematics and engineering to real-world electric power system problems • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, ability to effectively communicate with all levels of internal stakeholders and external customers/plant staff • Willingness to travel to support project work (up to 10%)
