What is the SVP, US Institutional Sales Manager – Taft-Hartley role responsible for?
Reporting to the Head of US Institutional Sales, the SVP, US Institutional Sales Manager – Taft-Hartley (“Sales Manager”) will be responsible for driving new business from Taft-Hartley retirement plans across the United States, spanning both defined benefit and defined contribution plans. The successful candidate will be responsible for direct sales to multi-employer plans, developing relationships with labor and management trustees, executive directors, CIOs, investment staff, consultants, and other key decision-makers and influencers.
The successful candidate will develop a strategic plan for the acquisition of new institutional assets and revenue for the firm within the Taft-Hartley market. They will enthusiastically execute the plan and coordinate sales efforts in collaboration with other distribution colleagues across multiple asset classes and solutions relevant to both DB and DC plans.
Of significant importance to the role are coordination, collaboration, and communication within the distribution team; with the investment teams; and with Franklin Templeton’s various investment groups. A well-articulated sales process that has resulted in a quantifiable track record of institutional sales success, ideally within the Taft-Hartley or broader institutional retirement market, is essential.
The Sales Manager will have the ability to successfully represent a broad range of asset classes, including traditional strategies, alternatives, and solutions relevant to both DB and DC plans.
She/He will play a vital role in continuing to enhance Franklin Templeton’s proactive presence and competitive position within the Taft-Hartley market through a driven, entrepreneurial, and innovative mindset executed in a highly collaborative manner. This role will be a critical addition to the distribution team and is expected to be a significant driver of Franklin Templeton’s continued growth in the US institutional market.
What are the ongoing responsibilities of the US Institutional Client Advisor – Taft-Hartley?
• Execute a comprehensive national institutional sales plan for the Taft-Hartley market across both DB and DC plans.
• Drive new institutional assets under management and revenue for Franklin Templeton.
• Develop a prioritized target market and relationship strategy for Taft-Hartley plans across the United States.
• Manage the sales pipeline in a collaborative and transparent manner.
• Develop relationships that drive ongoing business development opportunities with labor and management trustees, plan executives, CIOs, investment staff, consultants, recordkeepers, and other relevant decision-makers and intermediaries.
• Meet and aspire to exceed identified sales targets for new asset acquisition.
• Oversee ongoing client retention and growth within established relationships in close partnership with client relationship managers.
• Maintain an active and visible presence at relevant Taft-Hartley conferences, industry organizations, educational forums, and other market events.
• Actively contribute to the Microsoft Dynamics CRM system with timely meeting notes, relationship intelligence, and pipeline updates.
• Effectively build close, collaborative relationships with key internal stakeholders, including the sales team, consultant relations, client relationship managers, investment groups—including portfolio managers and analysts—the product team, the marketing team, and other relevant team members.
• Embrace Franklin Templeton’s high standards of care, integrity, and ethics.
• Continually seek opportunities to improve the quality of information and service offered to trustees, investment consultants, prospects, and clients.
What ideal qualifications, skills, and experience would help someone be successful?
• A minimum of 10 years of experience in institutional investor sales and/or consultant coverage, with significant experience in the Taft-Hartley or broader institutional retirement market. Experience spanning both DB and DC plans is strongly preferred.
• Established relationships with Taft-Hartley plans, trustees, investment staff, consultants, and other key market participants.
• Experience representing multiple asset classes, ideally including equity, fixed income, and alternatives.
• A strong understanding of Taft-Hartley plan governance, fiduciary and decision-making structures, consultant influence, and the distinct investment needs of DB and DC plans.
• An established track record of sales results and strategic and operational excellence in business development roles.
• Sound commercial acumen and the ability to build and develop relationships both internally and externally.
• Extensive travel required.
• Strong work ethic—driven, self-motivated, accountable for actions, and able to operate with a sense of urgency.
• Bachelor’s degree required. MBA and/or CFA preferred.
