About this role
About the Company
At Torc, we have always believed that autonomous vehicle technology will transform how we travel, move freight, and do business. A leader in autonomous driving since 2007, Torc has spent over a decade commercializing our solutions with experienced partners. Now a part of the Daimler family, we are focused solely on developing software for automated trucks to transform how the world moves freight. Join us and catapult your career with the company that helped pioneer autonomous technology, and the first AV software company with the vision to partner directly with a truck manufacturer.
Meet the Team
Our simulation team is the critical technical bridge between verification, model delivery, and autonomy consumers, building the foundation for AV 3.0 driver-out development and certification. We develop and integrate robust, scalable cloud-based simulation tools and infrastructure that support massive-scale, parallel execution for V&V and high-throughput RL training. As a Staff Software Engineer, you'll set technical direction for how the team approaches simulation-based V&V and RL training infrastructure, and act as a senior technical voice across verification, model delivery, and the teams that consume our simulation tools.
What You'll Do
• Define, build, and support testing of our autonomous trucks in a virtual testing environment, using a combination of data replay from real-world test data and simulation of real-world test and driving scenarios.
• Own technical direction and key architecture decisions for our simulation-based test environments and infrastructure, driving consensus across the simulation team and the teams it supports.
• Serve as the team's subject matter expert in the use of simulation, generating test scenarios, providing feedback on simulation tool features, and supporting other teams in adopting and using our simulation tools effectively.
• Support testing of virtual driver software, and provide guidance on the use of simulation-based and data replay-based tools and test environments across the organization.
• Develop simulation-based test scenarios, oversee execution of test plans and associated scenarios in simulation and replay-based test environments, and perform post-test activities including test event log analysis.
• Identify requirements for new or modified virtual testing tools, test infrastructure, and simulations of real-world components, including vehicle sensors and their related environment.
• Drive alignment across verification, model delivery, and autonomy consumer teams, representing the simulation team's roadmap, constraints, and priorities to peer teams and leadership.
• Formally mentor and develop engineers on the team, including more senior individual contributors, and help set the technical bar for the group.
• Lead process improvements across simulation-based testing practices, and report out to product and quality management on testing progress and technical risk.
What You'll Need to Succeed
• Demonstrates competencies and technical proficiencies typically acquired through one of the following:
• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Systems Engineering, or an engineering equivalent, plus 10+ years of experience
• Master's Degree in a related field, plus 7+ years of experience
• PhD in a related field, plus 5+ years of experience
• Considered highly skilled and proficient in discipline, conducting complex, important work under minimal supervision and with wide latitude for independent judgment.
• Strong understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
• Deep understanding of how simulation-based testing can be applied, including the appropriate use of recompute simulation.
• Extensive experience developing test scenarios and debugging complex software issues.
• Experience with Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation and testing methodologies.
• Proven ability to lead virtual testing events across specific areas of the system, tracing and troubleshooting the entire software stack.
• Demonstrated experience mentoring and developing engineers, including more senior individual contributors.
• Experience reporting out to product and quality management on testing progress and driving resolution of technical risk.
Bonus Points!
• Programming experience in C++ and Python (scripting).
• Experience with ROS (Robot Operating System).
• Software and system troubleshooting and problem-solving, with a specific focus on system-level analysis, fault isolation, and identification.
• Working knowledge of Test-Driven Development methodology and test framework architectures.
• Experience with Kanban, Scrum, or Scaled Agile development.
• Experience acting as a technical lead across multiple simulation or V&V initiatives.
