About this role
Job Description: At Remitly, we believe everyone deserves the freedom to access, move, and manage their money wherever life takes them. Since 2011, we've tirelessly delivered on our promise to customers sending money globally, providing secure, simple, and reliable ways to manage their money, ensuring true peace of mind. Whether it's supporting loved ones back home, growing a business across continents, or pursuing new opportunities abroad, we're not just here to move money—we're here to move our global customers forward. We're looking for builders, reimaginers, and global thinkers who want to work at the intersection of technology, trust, and transformation. If that's you and you're ready to do the most meaningful work of your career—we invite you to join over 2,800 passionate Remitlians worldwide who are united by our vision to transform lives with trusted financial services that transcend borders. About the Role As a Staff Software Engineer on the Receiver Products team, you will help build a new generation of financial services designed for the people who receive remittances — enabling receivers to not just collect funds, but to save and spend them safely within their own countries. This is a full-stack role that spans customer-facing web and mobile experiences and the backend services, APIs, and integrations they depend on, in close partnership with Remitly's global money-movement, identity, compliance, and pricing platforms.
You'll set technical direction for the team, break down ambiguous, greenfield problems into clear strategies, and deliver 0-to-1 product experiences that directly improve people's lives. You'll partner with product, design, analytics, compliance, and engineering peers to turn ambitious ideas into reliable, scalable systems.
You Will: • Operate AI-natively, using AI tools throughout your software development workflow — from agents that act as force-multipliers to drafting and iterating on technical specs and prototyping concepts — and help others on the team do the same.
• Own technical design and architecture for complex, full-stack systems that power the receiver experience across web, mobile, and backend services — defining APIs, data models, and event-driven architectures built to serve tens of millions of users.
• Deliver 0-to-1 product experiences, breaking down ambiguous, greenfield problems into clear technical strategies and shipping new receiver-facing capabilities end to end.
• Integrate with Remitly's money-movement platform, partnering with core platform teams to connect receiver-side capabilities to global disbursement, FX, liquidity, and compliance infrastructure while maintaining end-to-end data consistency.
• Champion security, trust, and compliance by embedding AML, KYC, and local regulatory requirements from day one, with least-privilege access, encryption, and audit trails as defaults.
• Raise the bar for reliable, observable, and scalable systems that meet strict availability and latency SLOs for the flows where customer trust matters most.
• Drive an engineering culture of excellence by mentoring engineers, leading design and code reviews, upholding architecture standards, and advocating best practices in coding, testing, and system design as we grow this team.
You Have: • 10+ years of professional software development experience, with a record of building and operating systems end-to-end.
• Expertise building customer-facing experiences at product scale with TypeScript, React, and/or native mobile development (iOS/Android, React Native).
• Expertise in one or more modern backend languages such as Java, Kotlin, Go, or Python, with a track record of delivering production-quality code.
• Demonstrated experience designing and building distributed, large-scale systems, including service-oriented and event-driven architectures, RESTful and async APIs, and relational or distributed databases.
• Experience leading large, multi-team initiatives end to end, and influencing technical direction across team boundaries.
• Experience using AI throughout the software development lifecycle, and helping others apply it well.
• Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure, including familiarity with managed services.
• Excellent written and verbal communication and collaboration skills.
Nice to Have: • Experience building financial products for emerging markets (LATAM, Sub-Saharan Africa, South/Southeast Asia, or similar).
• Background in payments infrastructure: card rails, ACH, real-time payment networks, mobile money, or digital wallets.
• Familiarity with AML/KYC frameworks, PCI-DSS, or SOC 2 compliance in a software context.
• Experience in FinTech, payments, or other regulated industries where reliability, security, and compliance shape engineering decisions.
