ROLE DESCRIPTION
Form Energy is hiring a Sr. Field Service Engineer that will play a critical role in the successful deployment and long-term operation of Form’s utility scale battery deployments. In this role, you will be part of a foundational team that is developing the infrastructure, tooling and processes to achieve high up-times for Form’s novel iron-air battery technology. While you will be the subject matter expert on the operation and serviceability of the liquid and gas handling battery sub-systems, you will also need to investigate and resolve issues on all of the battery’s sub-systems. Form’s goal is to detect and address issues before they affect the customer. This will require you to closely collaborate with the hardware and software design, manufacturing, quality, and reliability teams to create serviceable products, to drive rapid resolution of issues and to develop product improvements. You should be comfortable troubleshooting complex systems remotely (using telemetry data) and locally in the field, executing tasks yourself, directing other engineers and technicians, and coordinating closely with internal and customer stakeholders to achieve high customer satisfaction with Form’s 100-hour battery.
This opportunity will help shape and scale our multi-day energy storage system, contributing to the growth of a fast-moving company with breakthrough technology and an incredible mission, contributing to a sustainable future!
Relocation assistance is available.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
- Tooling & Diagnostics: Conceive of and specify field tooling, diagnostic software tools, and test fixtures required for maintaining and commissioning the electrolyte and gas management systems in Form’s batteries. Launch the use of these tools by being the first user of them and training others to use them.
- Design for Serviceability (DFS): Partner with the product design teams to ensure the electrolyte and gas management systems (pumps, valves, fans, vents, manifolds, sensors, and piping) are accessible, maintainable, and safe to service in field conditions. Ensure that the DFMEAs cover operational risks.
- Tier 3/4 Field Support: Perform remote and on-site diagnostics and troubleshooting of equipment using SQL and custom data visualization and analytic tools. Act as the ultimate subject matter expert (SME) for all escalated fluid system issues (e.g., actuator and sensor malfunctions, leaks, flow and thermal imbalances).
- Fleet Health and Product Feedback: Define data signatures that identify unhealthy fluid systems and incorporate them into Form’s fleet monitoring tools. Monitor field data from the deployed fleet to identify degradation trends in the fluid systems before catastrophic failure. Translate field performance data and technician feedback into actionable engineering change requests to improve product reliability.
- Fluid and Gas Handling Protocols: Author troubleshooting and repair procedures for the electrolyte and gas management systems that ensure personnel safety, comply with all regulatory requirements, and protect the environment. Develop field response protocols for fluid and gas leaks that do the same. Verify these procedures and protocols by executing them at customer sites and training others to execute them.
- Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Lead or support 8D or similar RCA processes for critical fluid system failures to determine their root cause and prevent reoccurrence of them.
- Be Hands-on: Travel to client or project sites up to 50% of the time. Provide additional capacity to perform field work during surge periods and to launch the use of new tools and procedures.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING:
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering or a related field and 6+ years of industry experience developing or servicing corrosive liquid or combustible gas handling systems.
- Prior experience with troubleshooting liquid and/or gas handling systems, such as ventilation and/or fluid distribution systems, or chemical processing equipment.
- Direct experience with Hydrogen gas management systems and/or electrolyte processing systems is a plus.
- Proven ability to read, interpret, and redline P&IDs and mechanical schematics.
- Working knowledge and ability to operate hand tools, power tools, and actuators typically
