An overview of this role

As a Senior Professional Services Engineer, you'll own delivery workstreams on federal engagements in FedRAMP-authorized cloud environments, Department of Defense (DoD) Impact Level 4 and 5 enclaves, and fully disconnected networks. You'll install and configure GitLab in classified and air-gapped environments, migrate agencies from legacy tooling, train government technical staff, and advise customers on how GitLab fits their security and compliance posture.

You'll work directly with program managers, engagement managers, Federal account teams, and agency stakeholders. You'll also collaborate with GitLab Product and Engineering when customer requirements don't have a clear answer yet, which happens often in this segment.

What you’ll do

• Deliver assigned Statement of Work scope independently, completing agreed engagement deliverables and escalating architecture decisions to technical architects and senior engineers.

• Install, configure, upgrade, troubleshoot, and tune GitLab reference architectures in cloud, on-premises, and air-gapped environments, including Geo, high-availability topologies, and Kubernetes-based deployments.

• Complete GitLab installations and upgrades in disconnected networks using offline package management, container registry mirroring, and dependency staging.

• Configure GitLab against agency security baselines, including Defense Information Systems Agency Security Technical Implementation Guide (DISA STIG) hardening, Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS)-compliant deployments, and Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) or Personal Identity Verification/Common Access Card (PIV/CAC)-backed authentication.

• Build and carry out migration plans from Bitbucket, GitHub Enterprise, Jenkins, and legacy version control systems to GitLab Self-Managed or GitLab Dedicated for Government.

• Serve as the primary technical contact for agency engineering and security teams, and run workshops and enablement sessions for government developers, platform teams, and information system security officers.

• Translate agency compliance requirements into GitLab configurations, clearly identify where GitLab doesn't yet meet a control, and support authorization work with the technical artifacts and evidence assessors request.

• Document implementations, create reusable runbooks and automation, flag scope changes and risks early, support Associate engineers, improve Professional Services delivery practices, and share federal compliance gaps with Product and Engineering.

What you’ll bring

• Experience delivering infrastructure or platform work in a customer-facing or consulting role, with the ability to work independently across concurrent engagements.

An active Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information (TS/SCI) clearance and the ability to work in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. This role is available only to candidates in the DC Metro area.

• Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform, Ansible, Packer, Puppet, or Chef.

• Experience working with major cloud providers, including exposure to government regions such as Amazon Web Services GovCloud, Azure Government, or Google Assured Workloads.

• Demonstrated experience deploying and administering GitLab, including continuous integration and continuous delivery, the container registry, and Premium or Ultimate features, plus production experience with Docker and Kubernetes.

• Delivery experience in a regulated or accredited environment, such as federal, DoD, state, defense industrial base, financial services, or healthcare environments.

• Familiarity with federal compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) 800-53 or 800-171, Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC), or DISA STIGs, and an understanding of how Authority to Operate timelines and change control affect delivery.

• Clear written and verbal communication with mixed technical audiences.

• Prior GitLab Professional Services, federal systems integrator, or agency delivery experience.

• Scripting experience in Python, Ruby, or Go.

• Experience with GitLab Dedicated for Government or another FedRAMP-authorized software-as-a-service environment.

• Contributions to GitLab or other open source projects.

About the team

We help government customers deploy and use GitLab in highly controlled environments. We work with engagement managers, Federal account teams, agency stakeholders, and GitLab Product and Engineering to deliver secure implementations, support authorization needs, and turn field findings
