About this role
Relay is a digital banking platform that gives self-made business owners the tools and know-how to be great with money—bringing clarity, confidence, and control to every dollar earned, so they can turn hard work into lasting success. We do this by replacing financial guesswork with real visibility, transforming cash flow from a constant source of stress into a clear signal owners can use to run stronger, more resilient businesses.
At Relay, product management is about outcomes, not outputs. We start with real customer problems and build solutions that move the needle for SMBs, and for our business. Our team pairs long-term vision with rapid iteration. We believe that trust is a product feature, and that usability, reliability, and polish aren't afterthoughts, they're core to how we earn the confidence of business owners.
Why this role matters
Signing up for a business bank account is the easy part. The hard part is the distance between "account opened" and "this is where I run my business." That distance is where most SMBs quietly stall; the first deposit that never lands, the payroll still running out of the old account, the bookkeeper who was never invited in. Every business owner who doesn't cross it stays on the cashflow tightrope we exist to get them off of.
As Senior Product Manager, Growth (Activation), you own that crossing. You'll own the journey from first login to funded, transacting, habitual use of Relay — and the systems, experiments, and in-product moments that get customers there faster and in greater numbers. This is a metrics-owning role: you'll be accountable for activation rate, time-to-first-deposit, and depth of product adoption in the first 90 days, and for the revenue those unlock.
In your first year, you might:
- Rebuild the post-signup experience so a new owner reaches their first funded transaction in days, not weeks
- Diagnose where and why customers drop between account approval, funding, and first payment, then ship the sequenced interventions that close those gaps
- Stand up the experimentation and lifecycle infrastructure that lets Relay run activation tests continuously rather than one-off
- Drive adoption of the products that make Relay sticky (multiple accounts, cards, bill pay, accounting integrations) by getting them in front of the right owner at the right moment
- Partner with Risk and Operations so that friction we add for good reasons (KYC, fraud controls) costs us as few good customers as possible
- Build the narrative and roadmap that aligns leadership, Marketing, and CX around a shared definition of an activated customer
What you'll be doing:
- Own activation end-to-end: define the vision, set the roadmap, and deliver measurable improvements to how quickly and completely SMBs start running their money through Relay
- Treat activation like a business: define the activation metric that actually predicts retention and revenue, instrument it, monitor it, and make decisions rooted in data and customer insight
- Run a real experiment engine: form hypotheses, design tests, read results honestly, and kill what doesn't work, while knowing when a problem calls for a rebuild rather than an A/B test
- Ship high-quality product from ideation to launch: partner closely with design and engineering as part of a leadership trifecta, raising the bar for usability, craft, and polish. Onboarding copy and empty states are your job, not someone else's
- Work across the whole first-run surface: in-product experiences, lifecycle messaging, and the handoffs between Marketing, Sales, and CX that make or break a new customer's first month
- Stay deeply connected to SMB customers: watch real owners set up their accounts, understand what makes them hesitate to move their money, and design for the trust that earns
- Build and tell the story: create clear narratives that inspire leadership and cross-functional partners, even in ambiguous situations
- Champion product culture at Relay: bring curiosity, ownership, and a high bar for quality that elevates the product team as a whole
Who you are
- At least five years of product management experience, with a track record of owning and materially moving a funnel or lifecycle metric
- Direct experience with activation, onboarding, or early-lifecycle work in a product-led business
- Strong data competency: you self-serve your metrics, write your own SQL, and can tell a real signal from a noisy test
- Fluent in experimentation. You know what your infrastructure can and can't support, and you're rigorous about what counts as a win
- Excellent storytelling and communication skills: you bring clarity and inspire conviction across engineering, design, and business stakeholders
- Experience working closely with engineering and design as part of a leadership trifecta to deliver polished, high-quality experiences
- Demonstrated success working cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing, and Customer Experience teams to ensure effective launches and adoption
- Comfort working in ambiguous environments while bringing structure and clarity where needed
- A hands-on operator's instinct. You're as comfortable in the details of a UX flow or a lifecycle trigger as in a roadmap review
Bonus points
- You've worked on activation in fintech, where compliance, funding, and risk controls sit directly in the path of the customer journey
- You've joined a company at its early stages and seen it through scale
- You're familiar with risk/fraud tools or KYC/onboarding frameworks and how to optimize around them without weakening them
- You've built lifecycle or CRM systems in partnership with a marketing team
