Mission Overview & Responsibilities :
The Publishing group at the New York Times aims to create a robust content management system for all of the Times: one that empowers development teams to build and evolve innovative experiences with speed and agility, and one that empowers editors and creators with a unified and interconnected suite of tools they can use with confidence to make the world's best journalism.
We are looking for a Senior Designer with a passion for journalism, design and technology to lead Design for the systems and workflows related to the production of media: images, videos, and audio.
As a Senior Designer, you will build complex features for these systems that take into account industry trends, business objectives, the needs of internal product development teams, as well as the needs of the journalists who use our CMS tools. You'll design solutions that pull together distributed media workflows into centralized systems on our publishing platform. You'll be a member of the Media Leads team along with a Technical Product Manager, an Engineering Manager and an Engineering Lead to provide direction for and oversee the execution of the roadmap. You'll scale through a Product Designer to deliver features and you'll report to the Executive Director of Product Design, Publishing.
This is an individual contributor role. At The Times, Senior Product Designers are not only focused on working with cross-functional teams, but learning about our products and continuing to sharpen their design skills from more experienced designers on the team. The Senior Product Designer will have successfully executed the design of complex features that has led to hitting team and company goals and seen them through a release cycle. They are an emerging leader with deepening expertise.
This is a hybrid role based in New York City.
Responsibilities:
• Collaborate on high-level product strategy, ensuring we're asking the right questions and solving for distinct needs.
• Navigate complex stakeholder needs across News and sub-brand editorial teams, internal system teams, and our business.
• Work with engineers and product teams to ensure design quality and consistency of shipped flows and interactions.
• Create clear, realistic, data-driven prototypes at high fidelity that leverage live APIs to inform Design and Engineering decisions.
• Create documentation (e.g. user journeys, experience maps, wireframes, frameworks) to lead conversations, build alignment, and help make decisions.
• Take product ideas and hone them into multiple solutions and concrete approaches, then collaboratively narrow ideas and establish requirements.
• Contribute to team and product design rituals.
• Nurture our design team, with an eye towards inspiring and mentoring your teammates and enhancing processes and learning.
• Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
• You will report to the Executive Director of Product Design, Publishing.
Basic Qualifications :
• A portfolio of work that showcases your design process along with finished design work.
• 5+ years of experience designing digital web or app products.
• 3+ years experience designing interactive products or tools.
• 1+ years of system design experience or working on platforms.
• Recent experience creating coded prototypes that use real datasets.
• Proficient in building prototypes with agentic coding tools such as (Claude, Cursor, Gemini Canvas, Retool, Figma).
• Proficient in design tools such as Figma.
• Experience with AI-assisted generative design.
• Experience working with cross-functional teams in an Agile development environment.
• Experience facilitating alignment through workshopping, brainstorms and cross functional collaboration.
Preferred Qualifications :
• Experience with content management systems and media production workflows.
• Demonstrated experience with visual design principles, type hierarchies and layout, and systems.
• Experience designing or conceptualizing large solutions while also aligning user and business goals.
• Experience presenting design decisions and impact.

Compensation and Benefits For This Role:
In addition to base salary, this role is also eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock. Benefits include medical, dental and vision benefits, Flexible Spending Accounts (F.S.A.s), a company-matching 401(k) plan, employee stock purchase plan, paid vacation, paid sick days, paid parental leave, tuition reimbursement and professional development programs. The annual base pay range for this role is between: $120,000 — $145,000 USD
