About this role

Job Description We are seeking a highly skilled Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the in-house mechanical design and CAD development of next-generation display systems for GM's Software Defined Vehicles (SDVs). In this role, you will be responsible for creating innovative mechanical design solutions that integrate advanced electronics, styling requirements, manufacturability, and vehicle packaging constraints.

You will own the mechanical architecture and CAD development for display systems, including styled surfaces, decorative components, display panels, PCBs, connectors, mounting strategies, and B-side integration features such as clips, fasteners, and attachment structures. Success in this role requires strong collaboration across Engineering, Design Studio, Manufacturing, CAE, and supplier teams to deliver world-class display experiences.

This position is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex integration challenges, influencing vehicle programs from concept through production, and driving best practices in virtual vehicle integration and display design.

What You'll Do • Lead mechanical design and CAD development for vehicle display systems and related electronics integration. • Create and optimize packaging concepts, virtual layouts, and design solutions that meet system, styling, manufacturing, and program requirements. • Develop and maintain CAD models, assemblies, and release data using GM's engineering tools and data management systems. • Drive display integration activities throughout multiple phases of the Global Vehicle Development Process (GVDP). • Perform packaging studies, clearance analysis, tolerance reviews, and design evaluations to support vehicle integration. • Work closely with CAE teams to improve designs through simulation, analysis, and validation results. • Facilitate design reviews and provide recommendations regarding architecture, manufacturability, assembly, and system integration. • Mentor engineers and designers on display design standards, CAD methodologies, virtual integration processes, and best practices. • Support continuous improvement through lessons learned, standards development, and implementation of advanced modeling techniques. • Release engineering data and documentation on time with a focus on quality and compliance.

Key Responsibilities • Develop, refine, and maintain display design criteria, typical sections, and standard modeling methods. • Own virtual integration methods and best practices for display systems. • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles throughout the design process. • Create and maintain material, mass, and component specifications. • Independently integrate subsystem and component designs into complete vehicle architectures. • Generate alternative concepts and recommend solutions that balance performance, cost, quality, and manufacturability. • Collaborate effectively with global engineering teams, design studios, suppliers, and cross-functional partners. • Stay current on emerging display technologies, vehicle interior trends, and advanced manufacturing methods.

Required Qualifications • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or a related technical field with 3+ years of product design experience, OR • 10+ years of product design experience in lieu of a technical degree. • Experience using GM engineering tools, including: • NX • Teamcenter • Vis Mockup • CAD release and data management systems

• Strong understanding of product development and manufacturing processes including: • Injection molding • Stamping • Machining • Extrusion

• Knowledge of vehicle development processes and engineering release systems. • Experience supporting CAD-based design and vehicle integration activities. • Working knowledge of CAE-supported design development. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. • Ability to independently solve complex design challenges while driving alignment across cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications • Automotive interior electronics or display system design experience. • Experience packaging and integrating: • PCBs • Electronic displays • Connectors • Electrical hardware

• Knowledge of: • Stamped metal design • Cast metal design • A-side and B-side plastic design • Paint, plating, and cosmetic surface requirements

• Strong understanding of quality, manufacturability, and assembly requirements for automotive electronics. • Excellent communication, collaboration, and leadership skills.

Why This Role You'll have the opportunity to shape the future of the in-vehicle experience by designing display systems that define how customers interact with GM's next generation of Software Defined Vehicles. Working alongside world-class engineering and design teams, you'll play a key role in bringing innovative display technologies from concept to production.
