About this role

For more than 55 years, Family Health Centers of San Diego’s (FHCSD) mission has been to provide caring, affordable, high-quality health care and supportive services to everyone, with a special commitment to uninsured, low-income and medically underserved persons.

FHCSD is one of the top 10 largest federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) in the country. We operate more than 90 sites across San Diego County, including 29 primary care clinics, 23 behavioral health facilities, 10 physical rehabilitation clinics, nine dental clinics, five vision clinics, four outpatient substance use treatment programs, three mobile medical units, two mobile counseling centers, two urgent care centers, and a pharmacy.

Our staff provides care to over 227,000 patients each year, of whom 91% are low-income and 29% are uninsured. FHCSD provides care to all. Services include, but are not limited to adult care, chronic disease management, pediatrics, comprehensive women’s care including obstetrics, dental, vision, case management, physical rehabilitation, speech therapy for children, vaccinations, infectious diseases, behavioral health, substance use counseling and a host of specialty services including cardiology, podiatry, endocrinology, dermatology, among others.  FHCSD also offers supportive services to those who are unsheltered and in need of intensive case management.

We are also the largest health care safety-net provider, largest school-based health care provider and the largest mental health provider in the San Diego region.

Family Health Centers of San Diego (FHCSD) is looking for a Senior HVAC Technician responsible for the operation, maintenance, inspection, troubleshooting, repair, optimization, and regulatory compliance of commercial HVAC systems and building environmental systems throughout Family Health Centers of San Diego facilities. Serves as the department's technical expert for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, refrigeration, building automation systems (BAS), and environmental controls. Provides advanced technical leadership, supports capital improvement projects, mentors Facilities staff, and ensures HVAC systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable regulatory and healthcare standards.

Responsibilities: • Operate, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and optimize commercial HVAC and refrigeration systems throughout multiple FHCSD facilities.

• Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on HVAC equipment to maximize system reliability, efficiency, and equipment life.

• Monitor and maintain chillers, boilers, air handling units (AHUs), rooftop units (RTUs), split systems, heat pumps, VAV systems, exhaust systems, hydronic systems, refrigeration equipment, and associated controls.

• Monitor indoor environmental conditions including temperature, humidity, ventilation, pressurization, indoor air quality, and airflow.

• Serve as the department's lead technician for advanced HVAC troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution of complex mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, and controls issues.

• Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize Building Automation Systems (BAS), Direct Digital Controls (DDC), and Energy Management Systems (EMS).

• Modify system schedules, sequences, operating parameters, and control strategies to improve building performance and energy efficiency.

• Coordinate with BAS vendors, contractors, and manufacturers to resolve programming, communication, and integration issues.

• Support HVAC systems serving clinical, laboratory, pharmacy, and specialty healthcare environments while maintaining compliance with applicable healthcare, infection prevention, and accreditation requirements.

• Provide technical leadership during facility renovations, equipment replacements, and capital improvement projects.

• Review contractor work for quality, safety, compliance, and adherence to project specifications.

• Develop recommendations for equipment replacement, lifecycle planning, and energy conservation initiatives.

• Lead the development and implementation of standardized HVAC training materials, competency assessments, and continuing education programs for Facilities staff.

• Mentor and train Facilities Technicians in HVAC system operation, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, building automation controls, energy management, and regulatory compliance to strengthen workforce capabilities, ensure reliable building performance, and support employee career development

• Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection documentation, compliance reports, and work orders utilizing the maintenance management system (CMMS).

• Respond to emergency service calls and participate in after-hours and on-call support as required.

• Maintain compliance with OSHA, EPA, refrigerant handling requirements, infection prevention standards, FHCSD policies, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements: • High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.

• Completion of a recognized HVAC apprenticeship, trade school, or technical training program preferred.

• EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification required.

• HVAC Excellence Certification, NATE Certification, Building Automation System certifications, OSHA 10/30 Certification, and Certified Healthcare Facility Technician (CHFT) credentials preferred.

• Minimum ten (10) years of progressively responsible commercial HVAC experience required.

• Demonstrated expertise maintaining commercial, healthcare, hospital, institutional, educational, or large commercial facilities.
