About this role

John Hancock’s Global Corporate Finance Group is inviting applicants for a Senior Associate Investment Analyst role within the Power & Infrastructure team. The group manages approximately C$60 billion of Manulife’s General Fund with a focus on public and private fixed income investments and an increasing focus on below investment grade rated transactions. The group includes more than 23 investment professionals with decades of industry experience, and a supportive culture that values collaboration, intellectual challenge, and continuous learning. Our work is very centrally focused on investment underwriting: understanding the risks our borrowers face and the quality of their management teams in addressing those risks, evaluating credit strength and assigning credit ratings, and making relative value recommendations incorporating both risk and return to find best value for our portfolio. In addition to the required credit work, there is a requirement to assist senior members in developing the private placement franchise which includes some deal origination work (transaction structuring and limited travel).

Position Responsibilities: • Provides lead-analyst coverage on a wide range of investments, including troubled credits. • Highly skilled spreadsheet modeling capabilities to prepare financial projections and run appropriate investment sensitivities. • Performs high-quality evaluation of financial reporting for current and prospective investments and monitors and assesses relevant industry trends. • Can routinely and efficiently evaluate and recommend waivers requested by borrowers. • Has demonstrated an ability to identify business opportunities, judge relative value, and make investment recommendations to team officers and Portfolio Management. • Utilizes effective communication skills to report investment recommendations to relevant approval authorities. • Review quarterly, semi-annual and annual financial reporting and disclosures from existing and prospective portfolio companies. • Analyze disclosures for material changes in companies’ operational performance and financial profile • Prepare periodic reviews of the performance of entities in which we have invested, including investment research and financial analysis. • Assist in the analysis of troubled credits and take the lead in generating quarterly internal reporting on those investments (“Loan Review”). • Create ad-hoc presentations and reports for internal reporting purposes related to various items such as portfolio risks or team performance. • Provide interdepartmental emails for reporting on material changes in company credit profiles for public entities within our portfolio (i.e. Mergers, large acquisitions, external rating agency changes, etc.). • Support senior members of the team with term sheet negotiation and new transaction underwriting

Shared Responsibilities/Team Support: • Understands Manulife’s approval processes well, can navigate and facilitate internal constituent groups to make sure that the appropriate areas of the firm (i.e. Portfolio Management, Accounting, Tax, Legal, and other areas) are consulted on new or existing investments.

People Leader Role: Yes, responsible for developing and managing junior staff (Analysts and Associates).

Required Qualifications: • 5+ years’ experience in the financial industry, including experience in manager due diligence or related function. • CFA and/or MBA likely obtained. • Undergraduate degree in Finance/Economics/Accounting desired. • Advanced knowledge of the investment marketplace, industry trends and competitive landscape. • Advanced user of Microsoft Office, particularly Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. • Must be able to manage multiple projects at once. • Strong project management skills; contacts and follows up with constituent parties (legal, accounting, portfolio) to move joint work forward. • Collaborative team player with strong verbal and written communication skills. • Strong quantitative, analytical skills and an aptitude to think critically and understand financial statement analysis. • Assess and recommend incremental public debt opportunities to Portfolio Managers . • Recommend potential strategic avenues for troubled credits. • Pursue special analytical projects.
