Department Office of General Counsel
Job Summary Under minimal supervision, is responsible for supporting the Legal Department and the organization in representing Denver Health's legal interests and maintaining its operations within the scope established by law. In alignment with Denver Health's overall strategy and mission, provides hands-on, business-focused counsel and representation to the organization requiring specialized legal knowledge with respect to healthcare contracts and any related matters. Must have a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of legal, compliance, operational and risk matters as required to craft appropriate agreements for Denver Health, including expertise in one or more specialized fields of legal practice, such as real estate, construction, IT, reimbursement, or managed care. This position reports directly to the General Counsel or Deputy General Counsel and has varying responsibility working with senior leadership and departmental leaders throughout the organization and serves as the primary legal advisor to designated Denver Health clinical or operational units, departments, or functions. This role requires individual to work on-site, full-time 4+ days per week. The environment at Denver Health can be fluid. Roles and responsibilities may be altered with little or no advance notice to accommodate changing business conditions and objectives as well as to tap into the skills and experience of its associates. Accordingly, employees may be asked to perform duties that are outside the work and duties listed. Regular, reliable, consistent, and punctual attendance is an essential function of this position since employee must be readily available and accessible to answer questions, educate and collaborate. This position also may require you to work standard hours/shifts, as well as flexible hours before and after standard hours/shifts, and to work in excess of 40 hours in a work week.
Essential Functions :
• Contract Review and Management • Serve as primary attorney for legal contracting, including contract drafting, review, negotiation and administration. Establish processes for legal contract review, tracking and renewals, and oversee and provide training to Denver Health departments. • Serve as primary attorney within the Office of General Counsel to designated Denver Health clinical or operational units, departments or functions. 60%
• Legal Advice and Counsel • Provide legal advice and counsel on a variety of health law matters, including day-to-day legal matters with a heavy emphasis on commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and rules and regulations. • Assist the Business and Operations teams in achieving legal and regulatory-compliant, desired outcomes. 10%
• Legislative Support and Advocacy • Assist the Office of Government Relations with drafting and reviewing Legislative bills, recommending strategies, drafting legislative proposals, providing legal guidance on issues affecting Denver Health, and ensuring the organization’s interests are effectively represented. 5%
• Litigation and Dispute Management • Manage litigation, disputes, and complex legal matters to mitigate risk and reach suitable resolutions for the organization. Interact with outside counsel representing Denver Health in various legal matters. As directed, draft and respond to demand letters, attend mediations, and represent Denver Health in other litigation matters. • Advise and ensure hospital collection efforts comply with applicable law while serving as a legal contact for the Third-Party Recovery Unit. Engage with plaintiff’s counsel while representing Denver Health’s interests in efforts to secure collections as needed. 5%
• Legal Research and Compliance • Conduct legal research and analysis, draft legal memoranda, and serve as a legal representative on various committees, as necessary. • Identify and analyze risks and deliver practical creative solutions to the business issues faced by Denver Health, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and applicable laws and regulations. 20%
Education :
• Graduation from an accredited law school with a J.D. Colorado Bar Association Required
Work Experience : • 7-9 years experience as a practicing attorney with emphasis in contract legal review and negotiation (Required) • Healthcare experience (Strongly preferred)
Licenses : • JD-State Bar - American Bar Association Required

Is timely, present, and engaged in work projects and commitments. • Ability to meet objectives/expectations/standards of quality, quantity, customer service, and timeliness both individually and in a team. • Ability to seek and identify opportunities to contribute within role and achieve goals and understand impact on the success of the team, department and organization. • Ability to effectively and persuasively advance and advocate for initiatives, policies, and perspectives of the organization. • Ability to review, negotiate, and document complex contracts: including those involving clinical services, pharmacy, laboratory, real estate, medical equipment, research activities, grants, IT software, and legal/commercial terms with attention to detail. • Well-versed in legal research and knowledge of applicable laws, codes, procedures, state and federal regulation
