Risk Director, Corporate Policy Office

As part of Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), you’ll work with talented associates to provide oversight and guidance to ensure our businesses effectively manage risk. The Corporate Policy Office (CPO) is a dedicated group of professionals within ERM, focused on executing second line-of-defense oversight responsibilities by improving governance and quality of policy documents for Capital One.

The Corporate Policy Office (CPO) is seeking a Director to direct the execution of the Enterprise Policy Program methodology, establishing strategies and processes to elevate document quality and governance across Capital One. Leading a team of relationship advisors, the Director will oversee policy documentation and program processes, partnering closely with senior leadership and key stakeholders across the enterprise to cultivate adherence and champion the CPO brand.

Success in this position requires strong collaboration with senior leaders to execute the core methodology and help propel major enterprise policy initiatives forward. Key competencies encompass Communication, Judgment, Problem Solving, and Influence. The ideal candidate possesses significant policy experience collaborating with senior leaders, alongside a proven track record of managing complex processes, frameworks, and initiatives through a customer-centric risk lens. They demonstrate expertise in refining and evaluating program strategies for continuous improvement, alongside strong experience creating and delivering executive presentations across diverse forums. Proven success leading advisory and oversight teams, a collaborative mindset, keen attention to detail, and the ability to drive change are critical for this role.

Responsibilities:

Leadership & Team Management • Lead and foster the growth of a team of relationship advisors, ensuring high levels of engagement with business areas

• Cultivate a culture of continuous improvement, collaboration, teamwork, and integrity within the CPO oversight functions

Methodology & Governance • Oversee and enhance the Enterprise Policy Program methodology to align with business objectives and stakeholder expectations

• Execute second line of defense oversight to improve the quality and governance of policy documents across the enterprise

• Analyze data and information to drive data-backed solutions for large-scale policy improvement initiatives

Problem Solving • Guide the CPO and policy stakeholders to identify and solve the right problems, even when navigating nuanced or precedent-free policy scenarios

• Design and implement robust, well-reasoned approaches to untangle complex, ambiguous policy topics 

• Utilize clear, incisive, and logical decision-making to resolve conflicting viewpoints and provide grounded guidance 

Stakeholder Engagement & Strategic Communication • Partner with senior leaders to drive adherence to policy documents

• Help guide the enterprise through change management and strategic shifts related to policy program updates

• Develop and deliver high-impact presentations for senior leadership and other forums to communicate necessary program updates and enhance the brand of the CPO.

Basic Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree or military experience

• At least 9 years of risk management experience

• At least 7 years of experience in financial services

• At least 5 years of people management experience

Preferred Qualifications: • Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) or Juris Doctorate (JD)

• 10+ years of experience leading risk programs, projects or initiatives across an organization

• 8+ years of experience in financial services

• 6+ years of experience in people management

• Policy management experience

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

McLean, VA: $206,000 - $235,100 for Director, Risk Management   Richmond, VA: $187,300 - $213,700 for Director, Risk Management  

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.

This role is also eligible to earn performance based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonus(es) and/or long term incentives (LTI). Incentives could be discretionary or non discretionary depending on the plan.
