Northrop Grumman Defense Systems , with an office located in Elkton, Maryland is currently seeking an experienced Propulsion Engineer – Structural Analysis – Level 3/4 to support our Solid Rocket Motor development efforts.

This Northrop Grumman facility in Elkton, Maryland began solid-propellant rocket operations in 1948. Today, the Elkton facility designs, develops, and produces solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems in programs professionally managed for a wide variety of Government and commercial customers.  The facility also serves as the hub for offsite engineering and test facilities in Ronkonkoma, NY, and Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Elkton, Maryland is located on the Upper Chesapeake Bay, midway between Philadelphia and Baltimore. Responsibilities: • Conduct structural analyses in support of solid rocket motor propulsion system design and verification activities. • Create mathematical models to match the physics of the system under evaluation including proper analysis methods/tools, proper boundary conditions, and appropriate material properties • Assist project team in design of experiments testing to provide necessary data to support detailed analyses. • Help in interpretation of analytical results and develop recommendations pertinent to system improvement. • Prepare and present technical reports and presentations of work product to both internal and external customers. • Support technical assessments of test hardware and test data including validation of analysis • Support propulsion and subsystem IPT leads to ensure technical and cost execution of each system component. • Form close working relationships with the customer technical community and specific customer technical points of contact.

The level to be hired is dependent upon demonstrated skills, experience, education, and competency.

Basic Qualifications for Principal (level 3): • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM plus 5 years of related experience or Master’s Degree in STEM plus at least 3 years of related experience • Experience in modeling with FEA software (ABAQUS, NASTRAN, ANSYS, FEMAP, or equivalent) • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present analytical results in both oral and written formats. • Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, presentation and critical thinking skills. • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) • Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance which requires US Citizenship as a pre-requisite

Basic Qualifications for Sr. Principal (level 4): • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM plus 8 years of related experience or Master’s Degree in STEM plus at least 6 years of related experience • Experience in modeling with FEA software (ABAQUS, NASTRAN, ANSYS, FEMAP, or equivalent) • Demonstrated ability to prepare and present analytical results in both oral and written formats. • Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, presentation and critical thinking skills. • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) • Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance which requires US Citizenship as a pre-requisite

Preferred Qualifications: • Degree in Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering • Current Active Security Clearance • Experience in modeling systems with material and geometric non-linearities involving large deformations and contact • Experience in modeling systems subject to high temperature environments undergoing ablation and material decomposition • Knowledge of advanced material modeling concepts such as metal plasticity, elastomeric behavior, and composite materials • Knowledge of system modeling tools such as, Matlab/Simulink, or equivalents. • Experience using NX solid modeling software

Primary Level Salary Range: $108,800.00 - $163,200.
