VCU Medical Center’s Adult Emergency Department provides comprehensive, specialized emergency care 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for critically ill and severely injured patients. VCU Medical Center is also one of only two adult Level I trauma centers in Virginia verified by the American College of Surgeons.
The Adult Emergency Department delivers care across the full continuum of treatment — from emergency stabilization and critical care to rehabilitation, home health, and follow-up services. More than 80,000 patients are treated annually, with state-of-the-art care available for cardiac, trauma, pediatric, obstetric, and gynecologic emergencies. The hospital also serves as a statewide referral center and functions as a coordinating facility for the Richmond metropolitan area during disasters and large-scale emergencies.
The Emergency Department (ED) Paramedic functions as an integral member of the interdisciplinary emergency medicine team at VCU Health, providing advanced in-hospital emergency care under the supervision of a licensed physician, medical director and manager. The ED Paramedic also supports trauma and critical care resuscitations, assists with airway management preparation, and helps ensure rapid room turnover and patient throughput. Additional duties include assisting patients with activities of daily living, providing comfort and nutritional support, maintaining a clean and safe clinical environment, stocking and managing medical supplies and equipment, and accurately collecting and documenting patient care data in accordance with department standards.
The ideal candidate demonstrates strong clinical judgment, attention to detail, adaptability under pressure, and a commitment to delivering compassionate, patient-centered emergency care as part of a collaborative healthcare team.
