The University of Miami/UHealth, Diabetes Education has an exciting opportunity for a Per Diem Nurse Educator. The Nurse Educator provides clinical education to nursing and patient care staff and facilitates evidenced-based practices within a specialized area of nursing. The incumbent collaborates with medical practitioners to incorporate nursing processes into the plan of care for a specialized group of patients. Moreover, this employee provides direct specialty nursing services to patients, ensuring adherence to Joint Commission standards and all related UHealth policies, procedures, and guidelines.
Core Job Functions:
1. Provides education and resources to enhance patient care. 2. Assists staff with educational needs, problem resolution, time management, and critical thinking skills development. 3. Collaborates with medical providers, patient care staff, and unit management in the planning, implementation, and delivery of educational curricula. 4. Implements clinical skills activities within established clinical and preceptorship models, monitors data trends, and implements educational strategies to ensure compliance with quality standards. 5. Provides staff support in the development of patient care plans, incorporating evidenced-based research and national standards. 6. Consults with and serves as a clinical resource for unit management to ensure quality patient care. 7. Educates technical and patient care staff in the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments, and coordinates in-service training and workshops. 8. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. 9. Maintains professional knowledge by affiliating with professional and technical organizations, and participating in applicable continuing education programs, conferences, seminars, and workshops. 10. Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets. Department Addendum – Per Diem Nurse Educator, Diabetes Education Education • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required (BSN).
• Master’s degree in Nursing, Nursing Education, or related healthcare field strongly preferred.
Certification / Licensure • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) certification required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, as applicable issued from the American Heart Association.
Experience • Minimum of two years of clinical nursing experience preferred.
• Demonstrated experience caring for and educating patients with diabetes.
• Experience in nursing education, professional development, or staff education preferred.
Knowledge and Skills • Advanced knowledge of diabetes management, including insulin therapy, glucose monitoring, hypoglycemia/hyperglycemia management, and diabetes technologies.
• Strong teaching, communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to provide education to both healthcare professionals and patients/families.
Department-Specific Responsibilities • Provides specialized diabetes education, training, and competency support for nursing and clinical staff.
• Serves as an educational resource for evidence-based diabetes management and safe clinical practice.
• Provides or supports diabetes self-management education for patients and families, as appropriate.
• Supports development and review of diabetes-related educational materials, competencies, and clinical resources.
• Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to promote standardized diabetes education and improve clinical practice and patient outcomes.
