About this role

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As part of a high functioning, cross-functional team, you will be responsible for the materials   and processing (M&P) of   all components (valves, regulators, actuators, EMAs, quick disconnects, umbilical panels, COPV’s,   etc )   for   all hardwa re   o n   the New Glenn rocket. This includes   review and approval of drawings for both in house and off the shelf components as well as project work such as developing processes and characterizing material properties and   allowables . You will be applying your experience in both metallic (e.g. casting, forming, extrusion, plating, corrosion, coating, brazing, anodization, welding, passivation) and non-metallic materials (e.g., O-rings, seals, bushings, lubricants), contributing greatly to our team as we mature this stage into a production vehicle.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:  

• Work with   a   cross-functional team on material selections, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce aerospace hardware.  

• Review and approve drawings for conformance to the New Glenn Parts, Materials and Process Plan (ensuring proper   selection   and definition of materials and processes .  

• Evaluat e   for   fluid   compatibility, cleanliness , oxygen   compatibility   and experience with different finishes/coatings .  

• Own material characterization ,   allowables   and help expand the current database of material properties.  

• Support the development of processes culminating in the drawing definition of   the process and inspection requirements.  

• Provide technical support and disposition of nonconformance's from the application of material and/or process control requirements implementation.  

• Experience with NDT types (RT, PT, UT, ET,   etc )    

Minimum Qualifications:  

• Bachelor of Science in Material Science, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Chemical, Aerospace Engineering or relevant field from ABET accredited school.  

• 5+   years experience   with materials and processes used in the aerospace,   or   other relevant industry.  

• Experience in materials and manufacturing process review and   selection , development, and qualification for aerospace applications .  

• Demonstrated experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of components, materials, and processes .  

• Knowledge of industry standards for material data analysis ( e.g.   MMPDS, MAPTIS, CMH-17, etc.)  

• Solid interpersonal and communication skills .  

• Ability to learn, grow and tackle new challenges in a fast-paced environment  

• Excellent attention to detail and task   ownership , someone who   demonstrates   pride in all work and willingness to perform low-level tasks when needed.  

• Ability to work harmoniously with cross-functional teams across large geographic distances.  

Preferred Qualifications:  

• Experience with polymer materials –   determining   properties and relevant testing (large plus for this team)  

• Experience with metallic materials,   high temperature   alloys   and non - metallic   materials  

• Experience with   wear coatings  

• Experience with   aircraft , launch vehicle, spacecraft, or satellite development.  

• Experience with materials in extreme environments (i.e., cryogenic temperatures, pure oxygen)  

• Experience with a variety of metallic and nonmetallic material manufacturing technologies  

• Experience with evaluating low cycle and high cycle fatigue performance of materials  

• Experience running ambient, elevated temperature, and cryogenic thermomechanical testing.  

• Experience with statistical analysis for the preparation of design   allowables .  

• Experience working with product lifecycle management (PLM) software, including release and approval processes  

  Base Pay Range for: WA applicants is $121,023.00 - $169,432.20 Other site ranges may differ
