The Mechanical Engineering Manager 2 is responsible for providing engineering The Mechanical Engineering Manager 2 is responsible for providing engineering leadership and technical direction to a Marine Systems integrated engineering team which consists of a diverse staff of approximately 12 Mechanical and Systems Engineers.  The engineering team is dispersed across Sunnyvale, CA and Ocean Springs MS.

This is a program Product Manager role with accountability for requirements and interface development, verification, mechanical design and development, engineering support of testing, qualification, and delivery of a complex hardware product for the U.S. Navy. The position responsibilities also include management of time keeping, performance reviews, staffing and resource planning, training, and team engagement. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated aptitude in areas of concept design rapid prototyping and testing, design of fabricated and machined components, CAD modeling / drawing review, requirements and interface management and verification, and successful execution of technical projects to cost and schedule targets.

Key Responsibilities

Technical / Program Leadership • Provide project and technical oversight of design activities performed by the group • Prepare cost estimates, provide proposal inputs, and review proposal content for both internal and external customers • Guide the mechanical design and development of fabricated and machined components, and electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic subsystems • Increase design engineering competencies through employee development and strategic hiring • Support test, qualification, and delivery activities, including review of test plans, procedures, and reports. • Provide ownership of and direction to the design processes used in the group • Basic understanding of the Design, Manufacturing and Test Integration process • Support department initiatives, forecasting and recruiting, technology roadmap creation, and champion continuous process improvements • Interface regularly with program office personnel and customer representatives, clearly communicating status, risks, and mitigation plans

People / Functional Leadership • Lead an integrated engineering team, providing clear direction, priorities, and technical mentoring. • Manage timekeeping, performance reviews, staffing and resource planning, and training for direct reports. • Guide employees in career development, training, and engagement activities. • Support department initiatives including forecasting and recruiting, technology roadmap creation, and continuous process improvements. • Increase design engineering competencies through employee development, coaching, and strategic hiring. • Balance employee needs, engagement, and career growth with business goals and program commitments. • Foster a collaborative, inclusive environment that emphasizes safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Basic Qualifications : • Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 9 years of engineering experience; OR a Master Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 7 years of engineering experience; OR a PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field with 5 years of engineering experience • Must be a US Citizen • Must be able to obtain and maintain a US Government Secret clearance (or higher) • Strong fundamentals in Design Engineering • Experience in systems engineering • Experience leading teams • Production issues resolution • Strong leadership qualities, including excellent communication and collaboration, team engagement, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications: • Master's Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Math) discipline (preferred Mechanical Engineering) and 7 years of engineering or technical management experience • Experience as a Technical Lead, Project Manager, or other demonstrated leadership role related to program execution • Experience in functional/people management • Understanding of launcher system principals of operation and design • Experience with requirements and interface management and verification • Experience with design of fabricated and machined components, or design of electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic subsystems • Understanding and knowledge of Agile (SCRUM) techniques and activities • Experience with requirements and interface management and verification or Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) experience • Technical project management experience with proven successful execution of technical projects to cost and schedule targets • Understanding and knowledge of Agile (SCRUM) techniques and activities. • Knowledge of Design Engineering processes, procedures and work instructions required to support both management and engineering tasks • Experience with proposals and Earned Value

Primary Level Salary Range: $126,600.00 - $189,800.00
