The listed pay range or pay rate reflects compensation for a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) position. Actual compensation may differ depending on assigned hours and position status (e.g., part-time).
Pay Range: $21.76 - $28.28 Scheduled Weekly Hours: 40 Position Overview Hospital Outpatient Coder I is responsible for accurately assigning ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, CPT/HCPCS procedure codes, and applicable modifiers for outpatient hospital encounter types including but not limited to Clinic Records, Diagnostic Services and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in accordance with official coding guidelines, payer policies, and facility-specific requirements. This role ensures complete, compliant, and timely coding to support quality reporting, accurate reimbursement, and organizational data integrity.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Experience: Certified Physician Coder – Apprentice (CPC-A) or Certified Outpatient Coder – Apprentice (COC-A) required. Certified Physician Coder (CPC) or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) preferred. Other Credentials: Knowledge and Skills: Possesses excellent organizational, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Has vigilance and keen attention to detail. Possesses proper phone and email etiquette for frequent hospital and private provider exchanges. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with ability to meet productivity and quality standards. Special Training: Thorough knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology. Understanding of ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS. Knowledge and experience using an encoder, and EMR required. Mental, Behavioral and Emotional Abilities: Ability to work independently in a remote environment. Ability to work under pressure. Ability to interact effectively with other staff members to complete certain aspects of job. Usual Work Day: 8 Hours Reporting Relationships Does this position formally supervise employees? No If set to YES, then this position has the authority (delegated) to hire, terminate, discipline, promote or effectively recommend such to manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Codes medical record documentation for outpatient services including but not limited to Clinic Records, Diagnostic Services and Emergency Medical Services (EMS). Meets or exceeds established quality and productivity benchmarks. Assists in management of the DNFB to ensure minimal number of uncoded days. Collaborates with Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI), billing, and revenue integrity teams to improve documentation, and optimize reimbursement. Identifies documentation gaps and escalates when clarification is needed. Contacts providers or other staff to obtain missing documentation timely to reduce DNFB accounts. Abstracts data with a high accuracy rate in accordance with established policy. Participates in creating a collaborative environment to promote excellence in coding and outcomes. Adapts to changing department demands to maintain high level of performance. Ensures compliance with medical coding policies and guidelines. Performs other duties as assigned.
