Job Description:

Summary:

The Graduate Assistant for Leadership & Global Engagement supports the Center for Leadership & Community Engagement (CLCE) in advancing student leadership and community impact. This role provides critical support to both leadership education programs and the Alternative Breaks initiative, assisting with training, workshops, and immersive experiences. The GA will coordinate program logistics, manage budgets, and help implement outreach and recruitment strategies. They will also serve as a liaison to campus partners and community organizations, while fostering inclusive, learner-centered environments. This position is ideal for a graduate student seeking professional experience in program administration, leadership development, and community-based engagement.

The Graduate Assistant for Leadership & Global Engagement plays a pivotal role in supporting the Center for Leadership & Community Engagement’s efforts to promote leadership development, global citizenship, and social responsibility. This position provides comprehensive support to both the Leadership Development and Global Engagement (Alternative Breaks) teams, assisting in the coordination of programs, immersive experiences, workshops, and events that foster inclusive student learning and meaningful community impact.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for a dedicated graduate student to gain professional experience in program administration, student leadership development, and community based learning.

Essential Functions:

1.) General Duties • Assist with scheduling and facilitating leadership development trainings, workshops, and Alternative Breaks sessions.

• Support curriculum development, workshop planning, and program evaluation.

• Provide coaching and mentorship to student leaders.

• Ensure that leadership and global engagement programming aligns with best practices such as the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, Servant Leadership, and others.  

2.) Program & Financial Management • Utilize systems such as Microsoft Office, Canvas, Canva, Qualtrics, Engage (Campus Labs), EMS Scheduling, and AU Abroad’s Terra Dotta to coordinate program logistics.

• Assist in managing budgets, processing financial transactions, and maintaining program records.

• Coordinate resources such as guest speakers, educational materials, and training resources for leadership and engagement programs.

3.) Outreach, Marketing, & Storytelling • Develop and implement outreach and recruitment strategies for leadership and global engagement programs.

• Support storytelling campaigns, social media promotion, and the creation of marketing materials (flyers, newsletters, web content).

• Capture and share student and program stories that demonstrate impact and inspire future participation.

4.) Campus & Community Partnerships • Serve as a liaison to campus partners and stakeholders, including academic departments, student organizations, Global Safety & Risk Management, Development & Alumni Relations, and University Communications.

• Cultivate relationships with local, national, and global nonprofit organizations and schools to strengthen community partnerships.

• Foster collaborations that enhance program visibility, student learning, and community impact.

5.) Other duties • Assist with additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisors to support the success of CLCE initiatives.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work: • Part-time.

• 18 - 20 hours per week.

Salary Range: • $19.40 per hour.

Required Education and Experience: • Experience in student leadership, workshop facilitation, or community based engagement.

• Strong communication, organizational, and administrative skills.

• Proficiency with computer systems and technology for program and financial management.

• Ability to design and facilitate learner-centered training.

• Ability to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.

Preferred Education and Experience: • Experience with Alternative Breaks, study abroad, or intercultural service-learning.

• Community based learning experience.

• Familiarity with leadership development theories and practices.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications: • Hybrid format (both in-office and virtual).

• Commitment: Academic year; must be a full-time, on-campus graduate student at American University.
