Job Profile: Food Service Assistant Manager

Job Summary: University Housing Dining & Culinary Services at UW–Madison is seeking a motivated leader to join our team!

As an Assistant Manager, you'll help lead daily operations across our residential dining, retail and catering services while supervising and developing both career and student staff. In this role, you will: • Lead daily dining, retail, and catering operations to deliver exceptional service • Supervise, coach, and support career and student employees • Ensure high standards for food quality, presentation, food safety, and customer service • Assist with planning and executing catered events across campus • Build positive relationships with students, guests, and campus partners • Support fast-paced, high-volume dining environments and provide leadership during emergencies

Work Schedule:  • The primary schedule for this position typically consists of 5, 8-hour shifts per week that may fall on any day of the week. Schedules may rotate every other weekend. This position is primarily scheduled to cover late afternoon and evenings. • Operational and work schedules will be closely aligned with the services and customer needs of the unit. As a result, work schedules may be adjusted during specific times of the year, including summer and winter break hours.

Key Job Responsibilities: • Leads and provides exceptional customer service, answers questions, and provides information regarding food preparation, catering, and associated activities

• Assists with unit budget monitoring, management of inventory levels, and staff training

• Develops, implements and oversees workflow components, and assigns and coordinates the day-to-day activities of food service staff

• Monitors adherence to federal, state, campus, and local food safety regulations, policies, and procedures, identifies needs and makes recommendations for improvement to leadership

• Selects, develops, implements and schedules logistics and menus for daily and catering operations

Department: Division of University Housing, Dining and Culinary Services

University Housing Dining and Culinary Services provides affordable meals made from locally sourced ingredients and innovative dining options to residents, guests, and staff. We have market-place style locations in six buildings throughout campus. These marketplaces offer a new variety of selections each day, as well as made-to-order stations. Additionally, there are convenience stores, coffeehouses, and two franchises throughout campus, as well as a Catering, and Central Production and Bakery operation. 

Within the Eagle Heights Community Garden, Dining and Culinary Services has a 1-acre Campus Farm producing vegetables that are used in menus in marketplaces, as well as in Grab & Go items in convenience stores and on the Electric Eats Food Truck.

Compensation: The starting annual salary is $53,500 or higher based on qualifications and includes a competitive retirement and benefits package, and a free meal for every shift! This is a full-time position. Benefits information can be found at ( https://hr.wisc.edu/benefits/ ).

Required Qualifications:  • One (1) year or more of leadership experience in a food service, retail or catering environment • A valid driver's license meeting UW Risk Management standards is required for catering positions and preferred for in-unit positions • Current ServSafe Manager certification, or the ability to be certified within the first 6 months of appointment

Preferred Qualifications: • 1+ years of leadership experience in a food service, retail, or catering environment • Experience training staff • Experience in an institutional food service or catering setting

Education: High School diploma preferred
