ROLE of the POSITION The University Police Department, Southern Command is seeking a Fleet Maintenance Coordinator (Part-Time / Temporary). This is around 20 hours per week (capped at 1,000 hours per fiscal year; schedule set by operational demand). This civilian position reports to the Lieutenant overseeing Fleet, has no supervisory responsibility, oversees the daily operational readiness, preventative maintenance, emergency repair coordination, and transport of departmental vehicles and specialized equipment. The Fleet Maintenance Coordinator acts as the central liaison between the Department and repair facilities, external commercial vendors, and specialized police upfitters to ensure both emergency and non-emergency vehicles remain safe, reliable, and compliant with operational standards.

Duties include but not limited to: • Vehicle Maintenance Scheduling: Schedule and coordinate routine preventative maintenance (oil changes, tire replacements, brake checks, state inspections, emissions testing and registration compliance) and mechanical repairs for all Department vehicles (marked, unmarked, motorcycles, and specialized units).

• Fleet Inspections & Quality Control: Perform routine visual and operational inspections of fleet vehicles for body damage, mechanical issues, tire wear, warning lights, and functional emergency equipment such as lights and sirens.

• Vendor & Service Liaison: Serve as the primary contact with internal fleet mechanics, including those at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) and the College of Southern Nevada (CSN); external mechanics, dealership service departments, repair shops and commercial vendors. Deliver and retrieve vehicles from on and off campus repair shops and upfitters, by operation, tow or trailer.

• Record Keeping & Database Management: Maintain accurate maintenance logs, service history records, recall notices, fuel usage, and work orders.  

• Outfitting & Specialized Equipment Coordination: Coordinate the installation, troubleshooting, and removal of specialized police emergency equipment.

• Emergency & Unscheduled Fleet Support: Assist in rapidly cycling spare/pool vehicles into service during emergency breakdowns, accidents, or scheduled service swaps.

• Inventory Control: Monitor available vehicle stock, spare keys, emergency vehicle kits and equipment, and basic maintenance inventory (fluid top-offs, wiper blades, spare bulbs).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

• Driver’s License: Valid Nevada Driver’s License, or a valid out-of-state license with the ability to obtain a Nevada license within the required timeframe. Driving record must meet NSHE’s standards for authorized drivers.

• Experience: Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in fleet administration, mechanical maintenance coordination, or logistics. Commensurate experience within a police department in a sworn or non-sworn position and with general knowledge of Fleet maintenance may be equivalent.

• Background Check: Must successfully pass a comprehensive criminal history background check, drug screen, polygraph and fingerprinting process required for law enforcement personnel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification or similar.

• Prior experience managing emergency response fleets (Police, Fire, EMS) or municipal fleet systems.

• Familiarity with law enforcement in-vehicle emergency equipment  

• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and Google Suite. Experience with fleet management or work order software.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES ​ • Knowledge: Sound knowledge of basic automotive mechanics, routine maintenance schedules, and equipment troubleshooting.

• Organization & Multitasking: Ability to prioritize work orders, manage multiple vehicle timelines simultaneously, and react quickly to unexpected vehicle breakdowns while operating efficiently within a part-time schedule.

• Communication: Clear oral and written communication skills to effectively coordinate with command staff, sworn and non-sworn personnel, mechanics and vendors.

• Service & Responsiveness: Respond promptly to vehicle and equipment requests from officers, supervisors, and command staff. Provide status updates on vehicles that are out of service, give realistic retur
