About this role
Organizational Overview Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) delivers world-class science supported by a complex and highly specialized infrastructure. The Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) Division, within the Facilities & Operations Directorate, plays a critical role in ensuring that this infrastructure is safe, reliable, efficient, and ready to support the Laboratory’s scientific mission.
Through a facility management model built around dedicated Facilities Project Managers, IFM proactively manages, maintains, and prepares BNL facilities and infrastructure to meet current operational needs while anticipating future requirements. Our team works in close partnership with scientists, engineers, operations personnel, crafts, contractors, and other stakeholders to keep facilities safe, compliant, reliable, and mission ready.
Position Description
The Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) Division, within the Facilities and Operations Directorate, is seeking a Facilities Project Manager to report directly to the IFM Division Manager.
The ideal candidate will bring strong experience in the day-to-day maintenance and operation of facilities, paired with excellent customer service and organizational skills. This role requires the ability to manage multiple buildings and associated assets, prioritize competing demands, and maintain a high level of attention to details. In this role, you will collaborate with professionals across scientific and engineering disciplines, solve meaningful operational challenges, and directly contribute to the reliability and readiness of infrastructure supporting Brookhaven’s research mission.
This position reports to the Facility Complex Management Manager. The hours of operation for this position are Monday- Friday 8am to 4:30pm. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Facility & Customer Management • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with building occupants and key points of contact. • Identify, document, prioritize, track, and follow through on facility deficiencies, maintenance requirements, and opportunities for improvement. • Conduct regular meetings with tenants to address operational needs and concerns. • Ensure facilities are operated in compliance with laboratory regulations and best practices, while supporting tenant needs. • Perform regular facility walkthroughs based on building needs and operational requirements. • Champion and coordinate responses to facility-related requests. • Support building occupants in maintaining appropriate Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H), housekeeping, and operational standards.
Project & Maintenance Coordination • Serve as project lead and primary point of contact for all work performed within assigned facilities, including contractor and vendor activities. • Coordinate with the Facility Operations Center (FOC) Preventive Maintenance (PM) Group regarding equipment changes and new installations. • Identify, develop, scope, screen, coordinate, and oversee facility projects and maintenance activities from initial need through completion. • Review and provide feedback on requests for facility modifications.
Facility Planning & Operational Readiness • Participate in building assessments, inspections, and staff meetings. • Review lessons learned and ensure similar conditions do not exist within assigned facilities. • Identify planned changes in facility use (e.g., space reconfiguration, equipment changes, occupancy changes, work schedules) and coordinate with IFM engineering staff to assess impacts on building systems.
Facility Planning & Operational Readiness • Keep the IFM Division Manager informed of issues that may impact facilities, personnel, operations, or the laboratory. • Partner with IFM engineering staff and other technical organizations to evaluate potential impacts on mechanical, electrical, utility, life-safety, and other building systems. • Proactively identify planned changes in facility use, including space reconfigurations, equipment installations or removals, occupancy changes, and changes in work schedules. • Provide timely updates status and feedback to laboratory management.
Emergency Preparedness & Compliance • Coordinate with the Emergency Preparedness Program to ensure compliance within assigned buildings. • Serve as a facility point of contact for the Emergency Services organization.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or technical discipline. • Minimum of 7 years of relevant facilities management, operations, maintenance, engineering, construction, or related field. • Broad, working knowledge of facility systems, operations and maintenance, with demonstrated diagnostic, trouble-shooting and problem-solving capabilities. • Experience planning, coordinating, and overseeing facility maintenance, infrastructure improvements, or facility-related projects. • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork, and customer service skills. • Demonstrated commitment to working safely, acting ethically, and taking personal accountability for operational excellence. • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams. • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, including:
• One-line electrical diagrams • Piping & Instrumentation drawings (P&IDs) • Architectural, mechanical, and electrical drawings
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering or technical discipline with a minimum of (10) years of relevant facilities and operation experience. • Experience supporting mission-critical facilities, including data
