AstraZeneca is seeking an External Engagement Strategy Lead (EESL) to join the US Hematology Medical Affairs team. Reporting to the US Medical Affairs Franchise Head, Hematology , this role will lead the development and execution of external engagement and medical congress strategies across the Hematology portfolio.
The EESL will serve as a strategic connector across US Medical Affairs, Global Medical Affairs, Research and Development, Commercial, and other cross-functional teams. The role will help ensure that AstraZeneca’s scientific capabilities are effectively deployed across medical congresses and external forums to support the Hematology strategy, advance scientific dialogue, and ultimately improve outcomes for patients.
This position operates at the intersection of strategy and execution , translating medical priorities into coordinated, insight-led external engagement plans with clear objectives, measurable outcomes, and strong governance.
Key Accountabilities • Congress Strategy and Execution
Lead the strategic planning, execution, and follow-up of US and international medical congress activities, including Tier 1 and Tier 2 congresses such as ASH and other priority Hematology meetings. Responsibilities include developing congress planning materials, leading planning meetings, coordinating congress playbooks, supporting meeting logistics, and ensuring a cohesive • AstraZeneca medical presence.
Serve as the headquarters focal point for priority congresses and collaborate with cross-functional partners to establish clear objectives, engagement priorities, communication plans, and post-congress activities. • Cross-Functional Alignment and Leadership
Act as the central point of coordination for congress and external engagement planning across Medical Affairs, Global Medical Affairs, Research and Development, Commercial, and other relevant functions. Lead alignment discussions, support the development and delivery of pre-congress materials, and represent the US Hematology Medical Affairs team in internal planning forums. Identify opportunities to reduce duplication, optimize resources, and strengthen the overall impact of scientific engagement. • External Expert and Stakeholder Engagement
Partner with Medical Leads, Regional Directors, Scientific Project Managers, and other stakeholders to develop and implement external engagement strategies aligned with Hematology medical plans. Coordinate engagement with External Scientific Experts and other key stakeholders, including external experts, professional societies, advocacy organizations, centers of excellence, investigators, and other strategic partners. Support the development of proposed engagement lists, meeting plans, timelines, and appropriate communication strategies. • Stakeholder Mapping and Segmentation
Build and maintain cross-indication stakeholder maps and segmentation strategies. Use scientific insights, stakeholder needs, and strategic priorities to help determine the most appropriate engagement approach, timing, and channel for each stakeholder group. • Scientific Communication and Resource Dissemination
Coordinate the timely communication and dissemination of congress-related resources to Field Medical and headquarters teams. This may include event information, recordings, presentations, key presentation lists, embargo information, and other approved scientific materials. Work with relevant internal teams to gather and incorporate appropriate resources into planning materials and ensure that stakeholders have access to consistent, accurate, and compliant information. • Budget and Resource Management
Partner with Team Project Managers and Medical Leads to support budget planning, tracking, and resource allocation for Hematology congress and external engagement activities. Coordinate external expert contracting and related planning activities for in-person workshops and other initiatives, in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and governance requirements. • Governance, Compliance, and Performance Measurement
Ensure that external engagement and congress activities are planned and executed in accordance with AstraZeneca policies, applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards. Lead leadership presentations on congress strategies and post-congress reports. Gather, analyze, and report key performance indicators and insights following congresses and other major engagements to assess effectiveness and inform future planning. Coordinate the receipt and distribution of meeting summaries and other approved outputs, as appropriate. • Internal Recognition and Coordination
Coordinate the distribution of approved internal recognition and incentive programs following congresses, workshops, and training activities, in alignment with relevant leadership and organizing teams.
Required Qualifications and Experience • Advanced scientific or clinical degree , such as PharmD, PhD, MD, NP/PA, MSc, or equivalent. • Hematology-Oncology expertise and a strong understanding of the clinical, scientific, and treatment landscape. • At least three years of Medical Affairs experience , with knowledge of medical strategy, clinical development, Field Medical operations, and evidence generation, including real-world evidence. • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering short- and long-term medical congress and external engagement strategies in a US pharmaceutical environment. • Strong cross-functional leadership, strategic influencing, relationship management, and project management capabilities. • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate complex scientific information clearly to a range of audiences. • Strong analytical, organizational, financial, and business p
