Marathon Petroleum Company LP has an opening for an Environmental Specialist at its refinery located in Salt Lake City, Utah.  This position is located in the Health, Environmental & Safety (HES) organization and reports to the Environmental Manager.  This position does include relocation.

Overview The Environmental Specialist provides environmental support to the refinery operations primarily in the areas of air compliance, air permitting, compliance reporting, emissions reporting, and general environmental compliance.  Responsible for providing day-to-day support on environmental compliance issues and in developing, managing, and improving environmental compliance systems.  Prepares or assists environmental staff in the preparation of reports required by environmental permits and applicable environmental regulations/rules.  Responsible for regulatory interpretation and developing compliance strategies to meet applicable regulations and associated record keeping requirements.  Position requires close interaction with operations and maintenance personnel, project engineers, regulators, and public.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Interprets and/or develops Company environmental policies and guidelines and develops methods and procedures for implementing and assuring conformance; advises appropriate managers and supervisors of the Company's goals and requirements; provides guidance and technical assistance in organizing and establishing programs and procedures to implement and administer such requirements, including budget inputs. Monitors compliance with these policies in assigned areas and directs related reports and recommendations to appropriate personnel. 2. Designs and/or reviews engineering designs and cost estimates for environmental equipment or systems; determines engineering specifications and recommends equipment, as required. 3. Identifies and investigates current and developing environmental problems or issues to determine cause and contributory circumstances; initiates steps to prevent recurrences and provides recommendations with appropriate personnel as well as communicating to senior management. 4. Keeps abreast of environmental legislation, regulatory agency actions, and international standards as well as related technological and administrative developments; develops/assists with legislative and regulatory impact assessment to ensure an appropriate response by the Company to governmental proposals; submits required reports and obtains various permits as required. 5. Develops environmental information, manuals, training material and programs; informs employees of related policies and procedures; conducts appropriate training sessions. 6. Represents the Company with appropriate trade associations, industry work groups and regulatory agencies. Serve as technical resource to Government Affairs in contact with elected officials. Maintains a working knowledge of issues and key Industry contacts, directs activities and budgets, and disseminates pertinent information. 7. Maintains sufficient professional expertise and proficiency in discipline to achieve Company expectations and perform technical assignments. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: • High School Diploma or GED required with 5 years of relevant environmental experience in process industry (e.g., refining, midstream, petrochemical, or other heavy industrial), or Bachelor’s degree in a HES related field with no relevant experience, or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with no relevant experience.

PREFERED QUALIFICATIONS •  High School Diploma or GED required with fifteen (15) years of relevant environmental experience in process industry (e.g., refining, midstream, petrochemical, or other heavy industrial), or bachelor’s degree in a HESS related field, Engineering degree, or advanced degree with seven (7) years of relevant environmental experience. • Detailed knowledge on current and proposed environmental rules and regulations with the ability to communicate impact plans to local leadership for budget development. • Ability to review engineering designs and specifications to ensure compliance with appropriate environmental rules and regulations. • Comprehensive knowledge of facilities and relationships with environmental rules and regulations with the ability to initiate steps that will avoid reoccurrence of environmental problems. • Excellent written and oral communication skills, organizational and planning skills, facilitation skills, computer skills • Refining or chemical industry experience  • Experience with federal and state air regulations. • Air permitting experience
