A Day in the Life                     Our summer internships are full-time ( 40 hours /week), paid positions lasting 10- 11 weeks . We offer competitive compensation, educational and social programming throughout the summer,   as well as   housing   assistance   and relocation support for eligible interns.  

Engineering Intern Opportunities for Students  

Interns may support one or more engineering areas based on business need, candidate background, and location availability. Examples of work in each area are listed below.  

Research & Development Engineering  

• Support design, development, analysis, and testing of engineering solutions during research and product development phases.  

• Contribute to system integration, verification, validation, risk analysis, and data-driven evaluation efforts.  

• Support safety testing, regulatory compliance, and transfer of products from development into manufacturing.  

Great for students who want to:  

• Gain exposure to how new medical technologies move from early concepts through validation and manufacturing readiness.  

• Apply engineering fundamentals to real design, testing, and system-level challenges.  

• Understand how safety, quality, and regulatory requirements influence engineering decisions.  

Operations Engineering  

• Design and support manufacturing processes, procedures, and production layouts for assemblies, equipment, machining, and material handling.  

• Provide technical and sustaining engineering support within manufacturing environments, including equipment and process improvements.  

• Contribute to continuous improvement efforts focused on quality, efficiency, and production yield.  

Great for students who want to:  

• Learn how products are built, assembled, and scaled for full-scale manufacturing.  

• See how engineering decisions directly   impact   production efficiency, cost, and output.  

• Gain hands-on experience solving process and equipment challenges in a manufacturing setting.  

Quality Engineering  

• Develop, apply, and   maintain   quality standards and protocols for materials, components, and finished products.  

• Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and supplier teams to support quality requirements and compliance.  

• Support reliability studies, data analysis, and evaluation of design or test methods to achieve product reliability targets.  

Great for students who want to:  

• Understand how quality systems and standards help ensure medical products are safe and compliant.  

• Work cross-functionally to support quality and reliability across the product lifecycle.  

• Build experience using data, testing, and process evaluation to support engineering decisions.  

Location and Work Model  

Most   internship positions are based at primary hubs in Minnesota, California, Colorado, Connecticut ,   and Massachusetts ,   with   additional   opportunities available in Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Tennessee, and Texas. Candidate location preferences are strongly considered during the interview and offer process; however, flexibility increases the number of potential opportunities available. All interns must   reside   in the U.S. for the duration of the internship.  

Interns are expected to work onsite a minimum of 4 days per week and  participate  full time,  40 hours  per week, as part of the intern cohort from June 1 through August 13 for semester system programs or June 14 through August 20 for quarter system programs.  

Required Qualifications  

• Working toward a bachelor's or   master's degree in Biomedical   Engineering ,   Mechanical   Engineering ,   Electrical   Engineering , Industrial   Engineering ,   Materials Science & Engineering ,   Computer Engineering , or a related engineering discipline with   an anticipated   graduation date of   Winter 2027, Spring 2028, Winter 2028, or Spring 2029.    

• Applicants for Medtronic’s Summer Internship Program must be currently authorized to work in the United States. Medtronic does not sponsor work authorization for internship positions. Individuals on temporary visa classifications, including E, F ‑ 1 (CPT or OPT), H ‑ 1, H ‑ 2, L, B, J, or TN, as well as anyone who   requires   employment sponsorship now or in the future, are not eligible for the Program .  

Preferred Qualifications  

• Prior experience in   engineering design, testing, manufacturing, quality, data analysis, or product development   through internships, academic projects, research, laboratory work, or relevant work experience.  

• Experience with engineering software, programming, CAD, data analysis, or laboratory equipment.  

• Experience creating technical documentation, lab oratory   reports, project summaries, test reports, or engineering presentations.  

• Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.  

• Flexibility in geographic location.  

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.
