Pay Range Hiring Range: $79,185 - $95,056 Annually  Pay Range: $79,185 - $110,905 Annually

  Pima County Development Services Department, Site Review Engineering Division is seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our dynamic, collaborative team as an Engineer I. This position will support the review of private commercial and residential development improvement projects throughout Pima County.

This is an in-office position located in Tucson, AZ, and cannot be remote. The  Development Services Department is unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Essential Functions:

As defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, this classification may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. Work assignments may vary depending on the department’s need and will be communicated to the applicant or incumbent by the supervisor.

• Participates in designs, studies and cost estimates and prepares reports for future and proposed projects;

• Analyses of engineering systems to optimize operations;

• Determines need for basic data, such as field surveys, location of utilities and soil tests and requests information through appropriate channels;

• Coordinates design and other features of work with other departments and public agencies;

• Reviews completed work for conformance with original job instructions and accepted engineering practices;

• Reviews or checks designs, drawings and profiles for adequacy, soundness of engineering features and practicality;

• Checks and reviews final plans and specifications including contract projects for submission to supervisor;

• Prepares or supervises the preparation of as-built plans or statistical analysis of systems;

• Performs research, investigative and design work;

• Manages the construction of public works projects;

• Provides professional engineering direction and guidance in the construction, maintenance or operation of public works facilities and structures;

• Performs design review of plans and technical reports for private development for conformance to County standards;

• Prepares and reviews engineering solicitations, invitations to bid and evaluates submittals;

• Reviews plans, specifications and analyses prepared under contract and administers contracts;

• Leads other engineering staff or contractors.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in engineering or closely-related field as determined by the department head at the time of recruitment AND current registration or licensure in any state as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Professional Engineer (RPE) or the ability to obtain registration in the State of Arizona during probation period.

Ensure the descriptions provided illustrate your competencies, specifically addressing the required and preferred qualifications.):  

• Minimum two (2) years experience reviewing subdivision improvement plans, including grading, drainage, sewer, water, and transportation improvements.

• Minimum two (2) years experience applying working knowledge of local, state, and federal development codes, standards, regulations, and permitting requirements within a development or permitting environment.

• Minimum two (2) years experience coordinating development project reviews with multiple internal divisions, external agencies, utility providers, and other project stakeholders.

• Minimum two (2) years experience performing technical engineering plan reviews, problem-solving, and analytical evaluations, including interpreting engineering plans, specifications, calculations, and technical reports.

• Minimum two (2) years experience managing development project submittals, documenting technical review comments, and communicating review requirements to applicants, engineers, consultants, and other project representatives.
