The EHS Specialist is a key member of the site leadership team, responsible for fostering a proactive safety culture and ensuring compliance with all applicable environmental, health, safety, security, and process safety regulations. This role leads the implementation, continuous improvement, and sustainability of EHSS programs and management systems while ensuring alignment with Solenis corporate policies and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA, DHS, and DOT requirements.

The EHS Specialist is also responsible for leading all Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Program (RMP) initiatives at the site, ensuring regulatory compliance, operational excellence, and effective risk mitigation.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership & EHSS Culture • Promote a culture of safety excellence through employee engagement, accountability, leadership visibility, and proactive hazard identification. • Lead and develop the site EHSS team and programs, ensuring alignment with Solenis’ global EHSS strategy and business objectives. • Partner with Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and other functional teams to integrate EHSS principles into daily operations and long-term planning. • Conduct regular site assessments, safety observations, and workplace inspections to identify risks and drive continuous improvement. • Serve as the primary site representative for EHSS audits, inspections, regulatory agency interactions, and compliance reviews.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management • Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental, health, safety, security, PSM, and RMP regulations, permits, and corporate requirements. • Manage environmental permits and reporting requirements, including air, wastewater, stormwater, hazardous waste, Tier II, TRI, emissions inventories, and other regulatory submissions. • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, coordinating inspections, permit applications, renewals, modifications, and compliance communications. • Monitor regulatory developments, assess business impacts, and implement compliance strategies as needed. • Oversee site compliance with OSHA standards, including confined space entry, lockout/tagout (LOTO), machine guarding, fall protection, and related programs. • Lead and maintain PSM program elements, including Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), Mechanical Integrity, Management of Change (MOC), Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR), and incident investigations. • Oversee RMP compliance, emergency response preparedness, release prevention programs, and risk mitigation strategies. • Manage site security programs, including facility access controls, visitor management, and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) compliance. • Serve in an incident command role during emergency situations and support site emergency response activities.

Training, Emergency Preparedness & Employee Engagement • Develop, implement, and track EHSS training programs, including required and refresher training, through the site's Learning Management System (LMS). • Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective and preventive action initiatives to improve organizational learning and performance. • Facilitate safety committees, employee engagement initiatives, and site-wide awareness programs that promote shared ownership of EHSS performance. • Coordinate emergency response planning, drills, and training to ensure organizational readiness. • Maintain required professional certifications and licenses, including EPA Method 22 (Opacity) Certification and Class 4 Drinking Water License.

Documentation & Management Systems • Maintain EHSS procedures, Safety Data Sheet (SDS) records, regulatory documentation, compliance records, and other required management system documentation. • Ensure the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous waste in accordance with RCRA requirements and site procedures. • Maintain environmental, safety, chemical inventory, waste management, and compliance data within SAP and other applicable digital systems.

Education: • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Chemical Engineering, or related field required. • Advanced EHSS certifications (e.g., CSP, CHMM) preferred.

Experience: • 5–10 years of progressive EHSS experience in chemical manufacturing or similar high-hazard industry. • Strong working knowledge of PSM/RMP regulations and implementation. • Experience with ISO 14001 and Responsible Care® management systems preferred.

Specialized Knowledge & Skills: • In-depth understanding of federal and state EHS regulations. • Proficient in MS Office and EHSS management systems (e.g., SAP, Velocity EHS, Intelex). • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills—capable of influencing at all levels of the organization. • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, solve complex problems, and drive change in a fast-paced environment.
