A Brief Overview The Director of Financial Reporting & Technical Accounting is responsible for performing a variety of duties including, but not limited to, overseeing all enterprise-wide financial reporting activities and serves as the organization's foremost authority on the application of U.S. GAAP to complex and evolving accounting matters. This role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of financial statements while leading the end-to-end financial data lifecycle.
This Director is responsible for managing accounting policies, regulatory reporting, financial close processes, and internal controls - driving operational efficiency and supporting strategic decision-making through high-quality financial insights. You will lead the assessment, documentation, and operationalization of complex accounting matters across a broad range of GAAP topics, partnering closely with cross-functional leaders to maintain strong governance, optimize reporting capabilities, and support the organization's financial health and long-term objectives.

What you will do • Enterprise Financial Reporting & External Compliance:
• Oversee the preparation, review, and delivery of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in conformity with U.S. GAAP and applicable non-profit reporting standards, managing the reporting calendar to ensure timely, accurate, and transparent communication with internal stakeholders, regulators, and auditors.
• Oversee all financial statement footnote disclosures, ensuring completeness, accuracy, and alignment with technical accounting conclusions and organizational narrative.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors on technical accounting and reporting matters; lead preparation and coordination of the annual financial audit.
• Provide support for bond offerings, debt covenant compliance reporting, remarketing, and other financing activities.
• Leverage financial storytelling to communicate insights at the appropriate level - translating complex accounting outcomes into clear, decision-relevant narratives for operational teams and executive leadership.
• Technical Accounting & Accounting Policy:
• Evaluate complex and non-routine transactions and document accounting conclusions under U.S. GAAP, including the preparation of technical accounting memoranda and position papers for management and external auditors.
• Translate technical conclusions into practical guidance for accounting operations, including journal entries, close support, footnote disclosures, and control considerations.
• Maintain and continuously enhance the organization’s technical accounting framework, including policies, interpretive guidance, and documentation for recurring and non-recurring accounting matters.
• Monitor new and proposed accounting standards, assess organizational impact, and lead implementation efforts with clarity and minimal disruption.
• Advise on complex accounting areas including revenue recognition, leases, grants and contributions, investments, debt, business combinations, consolidations, and other non-standard arrangements unique to a non-profit academic health system.
• Internal Controls, Governance & Risk Management:
• Champion internal controls and risk mitigation strategies, ensuring robust governance and operational excellence across the financial reporting lifecycle.
• Design, implement, and maintain a strong internal controls framework over financial reporting - appropriate to the non-profit healthcare environment.
• Identify control gaps, recommend and implement remediation activities, and partner with operational finance teams to sustain improvements over time.
• Provide guidance on the financial reporting and control implications of process changes, new system implementations, and organizational restructurings.
• Strategic Business Partnership & Decision Support:
• Partner with Tax, Legal, FP&A, Treasury, and other cross-functional teams to assess the accounting implications of new products, commercial arrangements, strategic transactions, and business initiatives—early and proactively.
• Lead scenario planning and critical analysis to assess the financial implications of business initiatives and regulatory changes, surfacing risk and opportunity for senior leadership.
• Collaborate across finance and enterprise teams to align reporting with strategic objectives and organizational impact.
• Assist with preparation of the department’s annual budget and support other strategic financial initiatives as needed.
• Answer questions from departments and senior management with a courteous, solutions-oriented approach - resolving accounting and reporting issues thoughtfully and efficiently.
• Reporting Transformation, Systems & Analytics:
• Drive continuous improvement in reporting systems and processes by leveraging technology to enhance efficiency, scalability, and data integrity, fostering a culture of innovation, creative thinking, and proactive problem-solving.
• Oversee and enhance finance analytics capabilities within the Controller’s Office, developing dashboards, trend analyses, and management reporting packages that drive insight and decision-making.
• Partner with both the Finance Systems, Service, and Transformation team and Technology Digital Solutions (TDS) on financial systems projects, data integrity, and the transmission and validation of financial data.
