Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
Responsibilities:
Prepares cellular specimens, examine them using light microscopy and report any abnormalities discovered. Performs microscopic screening and interpretations of gynecologic specimens including retrieval of all significant clinical history, referral of all abnormal smears to pathologist for consulting final diagnosis, one on one interpretation of abnormal with the pathologist and recording, coding and reporting of diagnosis and filing patient smears. Rescreens 10% of negative high risk cases.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS • Completes microscopic screening and interpretations of gynecologic specimens, including retrieval of all significant clinical history, referral of all abnormal smears to pathologist for consulting final diagnosis, one-on-one interpretation of abnormal results with the pathologist and recording, coding and reporting of diagnosis and filing patient smears. Rescreens 10% of negative high risk cases. • Prepares, screens and completes microscopic interpretation of non-gynecologic specimens, including gross description, cellular preparation of specimens using approved procedures, retrieval of clinical history, review of call cases with cytopathologist, recording and reporting of diagnosis. • Assists with special procedures for fine needle aspiration and endoscopic brush cytology, including technical advice to clinician, obtaining history, staining and preparation of specimen, review with cytotechnologist, recording and reporting test results, and correlation studies. • Assists in accessioning and staining of gynecologic specimens as needed. • Provides informal instruction in the fundamentals of gyn and non-gyn cytology to pathology residents. • Develops and updates workshop material covering all areas of cytology to be used as instructional material locally, nationally and internationally. • Maintains awareness of new techniques and methods in the field of cytology through attendance at local and national meetings and through reading in cytologic journals. • Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE • Bachelor's degree and completion of approved training program in cytotechnology required • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
