ABOUT THE COMPANY
The client is a growing construction company based in Virginia, led by a husband-and-wife team. As the business continues to expand, the company is looking for an experienced Construction Estimator who can take ownership of the estimating workload and help leadership focus on strategic growth and project oversight.
This is a lean, hands-on team that values initiative, reliability, and the ability to work independently without constant supervision.
JOB SUMMARY
We are seeking a Construction Estimator with at least 3 years of experience estimating US-based construction projects.
You will be responsible for identifying relevant bidding opportunities, performing quantity takeoffs, preparing and submitting bids, handling RFIs and submittals, and coordinating with vendors and subcontractors.
The ideal candidate is a true self-starter who can manage the estimating process from project identification through bid submission, make sound decisions independently, and consistently deliver accurate work with minimal rework.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Identify relevant construction projects and bidding opportunities aligned with the company's capabilities
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs using PlanHub and other estimating tools
- Review drawings, specifications, and project requirements to determine project scope
- Prepare accurate and competitive bids for full or partial project scopes
- Submit bids within required deadlines
- Handle RFIs, submittals, revisions, and bid updates
- Coordinate with vendors, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders
- Support pre-construction activities and project handoff
- Evaluate project opportunities and determine which bids are worth pursuing
- Maintain organized estimating and bidding records
- Attend weekly Friday strategic planning meetings with company leadership and department heads
- Provide updates, insights, and recommendations during planning discussions
- Work independently and manage estimating priorities without constant oversight
- Help improve estimating processes, bid quality, and overall project profitability
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of US construction estimating experience
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required
- Strong understanding of US construction estimating practices
- Experience performing quantity takeoffs and bid preparation
- Proficiency with takeoff and estimating software; PlanHub experience is a strong plus
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and project documents
- Familiarity with general construction and commercial projects
- Strong written and verbal English communication
- Strong initiative and self-starter mentality
- Excellent organization and follow-through
- Ability to work independently without requiring constant direction or supervision
- Reliable and committed to meeting deadlines and responsibilities
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience estimating commercial construction projects, particularly: - Retail - Medical offices - Hospitality
- Experience with residential construction projects
- Experience working directly with US-based contractors, subcontractors, vendors, or project owners
- Experience handling the full estimating cycle from project identification through bid submission
- Familiarity with PlanHub or similar project bidding platforms
- Strong understanding of construction materials, labor, subcontractor pricing, and project costs

- Demonstrated ability to improve estimating efficiency and support project profitability
- History of being dependable, responsive, and consistent in a remote work environment
NON-NEGOTIABLES
- Civil Engineering degree
- Minimum 3 years of US construction estimating experience
- Fluent English — written and verbal
- Ability to work independently without constant supervision
- Strong reliability and follow-through
- Ability to commit to 40 hours/week
- Availability to work within US Eastern Time
- Strong understanding of construction estimating and bid preparation
