About this role

Do you want to change how the world creates?

At Formlabs, we’re building the tools that make it possible for anyone to bring their ideas to life, from cutting-edge products to life-saving medical devices. Our 3D printing technology powers innovation at more than 50,000 industry leaders worldwide, including Apple, Google, Tesla, New Balance, and NASA. Together, we’re helping everyone design, prototype, and manufacture faster than ever before.

We’re a team of hands-on builders, engineers, and innovators reinventing how the world makes physical things. If you’re ready to shape the future of fabrication, come build it with us.

Your Impact:

We are bridging the gap between digital intent and physical reality. As an AI Software Intern , you will apply machine learning and deep learning techniques to solve complex physical, geometric, and vision constraints in the additive manufacturing space. You will work alongside our core software engineering teams to design, prototype, and scale intelligent algorithms that advance automated part preparation, spatial data analysis, and intelligent monitoring systems to optimize manufacturing success rates and enhance user workflows.

Internship Term: Fall 2026 (September 14 through December 18, 2026) Commitment : Full-time (40 hours/week) Location: Onsite in Somerville, MA (in-person) Application Materials Required : Resume and a link to a GitHub profile, portfolio, or technical project documentation showing work you have built.

What You’ll Do:

• Prototype Intelligent Algorithms: Design, implement, and evaluate machine learning models tailored to 3D spatial data, geometric analysis, and automated print workflows.

• Advance Computer Vision Systems: Develop and refine real-time vision pipelines and time-series analysis for system monitoring and defect detection.

• Optimize Inference Performance: Profile and optimize model architectures to ensure fast, resource-efficient runtime execution within desktop software or cloud environments.

• Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Partner with software engineers and cross-disciplinary teams to translate research concepts into functional, high-quality software prototypes.

About You:

• Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in Computer Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or a related quantitative field with strong foundations in linear algebra and 3D geometry.

• Deep proficiency in Python and hands-on prototyping experience using modern ML/DL frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow.

• Solid foundational knowledge of C++ and clean code principles, with an interest in writing performant, production-ready code.

• Experience handling unstructured datasets, point clouds, meshes, voxel grids, or applying machine learning to real-world physical systems.

• Bonus Points:

• Familiarity with edge deployment optimization (TensorRT, ONNX Runtime) or open-source 3D processing libraries (Open3D).

• Experience with open-source 3D/computational geometry processing libraries (e.g., Open3D, CGAL).

Intern Benefits & Perks:

• Flexible Out of Office Plan – take time when you need it
