Job Profile Summary: Performs maintenance in an area of specialty to ensure proper installation, modification, and repair of related systems. Job Description: The Academic Facilities Specialist Senior (Photography Studio Technician) is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and technical support of the School of Art's photography facilities within the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. This includes photography studios, classrooms, laboratories, analog and digital imaging equipment, fine art post-production and printing systems, and related instructional technologies. The position oversees the daily operation of the UGB equipment checkout area through the supervision and training of student workers and maintains equipment inventories, materials, and supplies to support instructional and creative activities. The academic facilities specialist ensures that photography facilities are safe, functional, and properly equipped to meet the academic, research, and creative needs of faculty and students. This position monitors compliance with university, Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), and applicable regulatory standards, and provides technical expertise, training, and consultation to faculty, staff, and students in support of complex photographic processes, specialized equipment, and advanced studio projects.

Position Salary Range: • $50,000 - $62,000 annually

Essential Duties: • Maintains photography studios, labs, equipment, and related instructional facilities to ensure they are safe, functional, and fully operational in support of teaching, research, and creative activities.

• Performs routine maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, installation, repair coordination, and inventory management for analog and digital photography equipment, computers, printers, lighting systems, and other specialized instructional equipment.

• Coordinates with faculty to prepare instructional spaces, equipment, and materials for classes, research projects, exhibitions, and special events.

• Oversees the daily operation of the UGB equipment checkout area by supervising, training, and scheduling student workers while maintaining accurate equipment inventories, checkout records, and maintenance logs.

• Monitors equipment, supply, and operational needs; researches and recommends replacement equipment, tools, and materials; provides technical guidance and cost estimates to assist leadership with budget planning, purchasing decisions, and long-term equipment replacement strategies.

• Conducts safety orientations and equipment training for faculty, staff, and students and ensures compliance with university, Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), OSHA, and departmental safety standards through proper documentation, chemical inventories, and operating procedures.

• Coordinates with Facilities Management and other university departments to report facility issues, facilitate repairs, and support the maintenance and operation of instructional spaces.

• Maintains current knowledge of photographic technologies and best practices to provide technical support and recommend operational improvements.

• Performs other related duties as assigned in support of the School's instructional, research, and creative mission.

Desired Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts, Photography, Studio Art, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience may be considered.

• Experience supporting photography studios, instructional labs, or similar creative or technical environments.

• Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting analog and digital photography equipment, printers, lighting systems, computers, and other specialized instructional technologies.

• Experience with RIP software, ink management workflows, Phase One camera systems, and advanced digital image capture, processing, and output is preferred.

• Experience administering or supporting equipment inventory and circulation systems, including WebCheckout or similar equipment management platforms.

• Experience training or instructing students, faculty, or staff on equipment operation, safety procedures, and best practices.

• Knowledge of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S), OSHA, chemical handling, and safe operation of instructional laboratory or studio environments.

• Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, troubleshoot technical issues, and manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.

• Experience using strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills to effectively manage competing priorities in a dynamic environment.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and establish positive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and individuals.

• Experience supervising, training, or mentoring student employees or other support staff is preferred.

• Demonstrated ability to stay current with emerging photographic technologies and recommend improvements to equipment, workflows, and operational practices.

• Experience providing technical recommendations and cost estimates to support equipment purchasing, maintenance planning, and operational decision-making.

Working Environment: • Activities are performed in a combination of environmentally controlled office, photography studio, laboratory, classroom, and equipment storage environments.

• Regular use of computers and standard office equipment requiring extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and use of a computer mouse.
